My new hot tent and stove!!

February 27 2009 at 3:12 PM

from IP address 76.70.75.177

It's here, and I'm so stoked I can hardly contain myself to type this! I'm just like a kid on Christmas day!

Without further a due, here it is...

Box as it arrived...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Contents in box. Tent, stove, velcro thimble cover, ballistic carry bag with roll top and snap. Also has two strong carry straps at bottom of bag...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Tent and thimble...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Close up outside thimble. Material is asbestos type...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

With thimble cover on...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Inside top reinforcement area...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Illustrates little white tabs for tying line to dry clothing, hanging light ect...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Illustrates YKK #10 zipper and closure quick clip...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Stove top, 4" collar...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Front of stove showing door and dampening system...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Pipe in stove, not telescopic but i knew that and that is ok by me...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Inside stove, no false bottom but i will add one to protect and prolong bottom of stove...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Re packaged up. I could easily put stove inside carry bag too but I would want another bag for stove first to keep tent clean...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

And that's it. Please give me you first impressions and tips before I head out with it.

I can't wait to give it trial run! I may head out next weekend to Sproule Lake where Andrew and his partner went. Anybody interested in something like that? Perhaps I'll throw up a thread and see what kind of interest I can generate. I'm going regardless but company is always better!

Any questions, I'll gladly answer anything I can or take any more detailed picture you would like. Just ask.

Cheers
Shawn

Honestly, every one of your photo-posts makes me smile. (And makes me feel like an outright lazy-asp for not doing that sort of recording of the neat stuff in life.)

But, seriously, hon...you don't need to type the img tags. happy.gif

Barbara,

I glad you enjoy my photo posts! But to be honest, that's MY part of being lazy! It's easier for me to post a picture than to type a paragraph trying to describe something, so I simply put up a photo and it speaks for itself. heh heh Also, I don't type in the image tags, I copy and paste directly from Photobucket. But I'm not sure why it appears as though I type in the tags?? Strange. But thanks for the tip!

Jeffery,

Right on dood! Keep me posted! It would be great to have you along!

Cheers

Ooops! I forgot to include the pricing.

650$ taxes and shipping included, for the tent and stove and piping...to my door! Also, I gave a 300$ deposit when I originally ordered the tent and stove.

Shawn, what's the weight of each? $600 all in is a damn good deal and the tent looks like it's well made. Some questions for you.

Tent:
- How does your tent go up? Single pole and guy out the sides?

Stove:
- How does your draft work?
- So the one end of the stove comes out? Can you post pics of how that works? I'm curious.
- Does the stove have legs?
- You should consider getting an elbow to re-direct your pipes away from your roof. It'll save you from putting spark holes on your tent, even if it's canvas. Either that or installing a spark arrestor at the end of your piping. Straight up piping is great coz your draw will be very good.

I think we have one more winter trip lined up this season, if you wanna hook up. It won't be in Algonquin though sad.gif

That looks like a nice set-up. Is it the Alaskan model? What fabric/weight option and stove size did you choose?

Enjoy Sproule if you get up there. If you go, you may notice a camp site set up by other winter campers along the Sunday-Sproule portage (fair close to Sproule).

Have fun.

Andrew.

Stove Bottom

February 28 2009, 10:43 AM

Perhaps consider some 1/2" or 1" fire brick

It rather light and will sdave the stove bottom

Mind you a secondard stell bottom ( spaced from Bottom)
will also work well

Re: Stove Bottom

Jkr,

It's designed for a single pole. I will have one made of aluminum that slides inside and is adjustable like Markus's tent pole.

Draft is done with damper that I had to purchase. 4.99$ Home Hardware.

No legs have to pick up a piece of sheet metal and bend into two (A A) for legs, or just rest on logs. Picked up adjustable galvanized 28 gauge elbow today for 3.00$ Thanks for the tip!

Yes, keep me posted on any winter outings you may have lined up!

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Note: I will be cutting off the two rivets, that hold the short pipe in the opening, off and flipping the connection upside down so that my piping starts off female-male to prevent creosote from dripping down and potentially causing a fire. I received this tip from HOOP @ Wintertrekking.

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Andrew,

Yes it's the Alaskan model. 9 x 9, 2' wall, 7.5 center, 10 oz. Army duck Sunforger (20 lb)

Racoon,

Excellent idea! I know what you mean. I usually get this for my bbq each year. I will pick some up at CTC. Thanks dood!

Cheers
Shawn

Correction.

February 28 2009, 5:25 PM

That should read MALE---->FEMALE, from bottom to top, when i referred to pipe configuration. Not the other way around.

Lucky you!

February 28 2009, 8:51 PM

Hey Sean ,,,,

Congrats on the tent and stove; they look great, and I can't wait to see photos of them in action.

Question, did the tent come with a centre pole like the one Markus has, or did you have to get one separately?

I would love to join you next weekend, but am not sure why week will be like. If I can I'll let you know.

Either way, I look forward to your trip report and photos!

Cheers

MikeB,

Yes I will definitely do a burn to rid any potential poisonous vapor that you get from galvanized (piping) metal.

Thanks Mike!

That's a drag you can't make it because I will be doing some testing of dehydrated chili, pasta sauce, chicken, peppers, and venison...with a host of other fine foods of course. happy.gif

JeffP,

It's shipped with out a pole, but I will get one like Markus has for sure! And yes, keep me posted if you can make it! If you can, bring your appetite!

Cheers
Shawn

Hi Shawn,

A great buy, and am glad to see you are 'hot' for winter camping!
How many people can sleep in your tent?
The four of us were talking about doing an expedition trip next winter, possibly 7-10 days.
With your tent we could have what? A group of eight people? Would be very cool.

I am thinking if we do a trip later in the season, i.e. our trip versus Andrew's trip, we could shorten our travel times.
I was thinking of going to Dickson Lake/ Laviellie area. We could hopefully ski up Opeongo road, then hopefully Ice-Skate up Opeongo to the Cart trail then traversing the trail to Dickson Lake, by snowshoe.

I do not think I can go winter camping anymore this season sad.gif

Hope you can and would look forward to your report with glee!
Cheers happy.gif

Hey Markus,

The website says 2-3 but I won't know for sure until I try it out this weekend. It's a 9x9 so I'm thinking three. Got to get cracking on the center pole this week.

That "expedition" sounds like it would be a blast! Skating, skiing, snowshoeing, wow! I have a brand new pair of Bauer Supremes that have never been laced up! Count me in for sure Markus!

Too bad your winter adventures in the Park have come to a grinding halt, but spring is just around the corner and soon you'll be paddling till your hearts content. Not to mention your mega trip you and Joan are undertaking this year.

After this summer I may have to try and convince ol' JefferyM into planning one of those too. From what I understand, he's no stranger to those long treks either. What I'd really like to do is cross the park, either North-South or East-West. I think that would be a sweet trip too! Oh Jeffery...happy.gif

Cheers
Shawn

:D. Yea dude, I did 31 days and then 19 days last year (Plus a bunch of small AA trips..) Prior to that I've done 28 days, 24 days and a large number of 22/23 day trips. Still have to plan something for this year, but it'd be great if someone else wanted to join me, even just for part of the trip happy.gif

Holy Radisson and Groseilliers Batman!

You've been on some long trips brotha. Way ta go Jeffery! When our paths cross again I may have a few questions for you about packing for the lengthy (12 days) trip I'm going on early May with Chris. And tips would be greatly appreciated.

Sadly I won't be able to make APP this weekend as I still haven't really shaken this flue bug I have been battling over the last few days. And I don't want to ruin anyone else weekend if they are counting on me to be there, ie...accommodation wise. So I'm going to postpone it and make a loose plan for the following weekend. But I will try to get out this Sat to set up my tent and burn off the galvanized coating and will take photos.

When I know for certain it's a go, I'll book it and post a thread and see if i can generate some interest.

Cheers Jeffery!

Talk soon
Shawn

Re: Lucky you!

Hey check out what I found @ Home Depot!

A pole for any tent that requires a single pole like mine or Markus's.

It's a pole for drywall installers to hold drywall up to the ceiling before installation.

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Easy to use quick release ratchet system

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

And then it extends to almost 10 feet! I only pulled it out a bit for you to get an idea.

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Only weighs a few pounds and cost $29.99!! It will hold 110 lbs. If I had one made, the material would cost more than that!

Is that cool or what?

Also, I picked up a couple of C-Vent 26 gauge adjustable elbows for 5$ a piece.

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

And a couple of bags of tent pegs. 11.5 " long for winter use. $3.99!

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

And last but not least, an olive barrel i picked up when I was down in Toronto last week. Free.

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Cheers
Shawn
