Jeffrey's map

March 7 2009 at 12:01 PM

from IP address 99.251.106.204

I am not great with a computer so I was woundering if someone can tell me how to print off enlarged sections of Jeffrey's map for tripping. Can this be done? and if someone could give me some tips, it would be great. I look forward to purchasing a map book from Jeffrey if they are made available.

Hey Rob!

You sure can, but it might be a bit of a pain. The handy thing is that I've cut up the new map into 72 sections at a 1:80 000 scale for most, so it'd be really easy to print them (They're also the book pages.) It'll be another week before I post the new map and have the map book ready for purchase, but if you tell me what area you'd like maps of I can send you digital versions the appropriate mapbook pages (They're suitable for printing on regular 8.5"x11" paper.)

I love the map. I previously was able to print off sections but am unable to any longer. I am planning a loop through Merchant, Happy Isle, Big Trout, Burntroot, LaMuir, Hogan, and back through the Crows with day trips here and there. I would be grateful for any pages you could send me. Thx and well done. I will definitely be buying the book.

Re: Jeffrey's map

March 8 2009, 5:01 PM

I feel that I must out-do AZ and Rob L and Fred Forest and many others in complimenting Jeffrey on the effort he has put in to the map.

What brought me back to the map discussion was the Lake Lismer thread which shows an updated version of Jeff's map that I don't have.

--So-- I went to Jeff's site and could not find the updated version.

--But--what I did find, was a 'totaly selfless site' which offered an online version of his maps for 'free'. Instead of askng for donations for his own time and effort, Jeff discretly suggests donations to--The Algonquin Backcountry Recreationalists--The Brent Cabin Fund--The Friends of Algonquin.

When the map books become available I would consider it a privilage to purchase 2 personaly signed copies with a notation (something along the lines of)---

"It is my great pleasure to document the Algonquin Highlands. Algonquin Park is the last remaining natural habitat in Southern Ontario to sustain our wilderness heritage. It is my hope that this map is relevant for centurys to come."
signed JeffreyM

Jeffrey, I hope you are not offended by my presumption. To me the map is a documentation of the park in 2008. It is my hope that it will remain unchanged for many years to come.

Re: Jeffrey's map

March 8 2009, 5:37 PM

james67,

Thanks dude! Your kind words really mean a lot! The new map will be posted in a week or so, but email me and I'll send you a copy right now. Mark S has an early copy since he was instrumental in helping me choose the colours and design for the new map (So I don't do anything stupid like coloured lakes, lol!)

You'll get two of the first copies of the book :D. Since the shipping from the printer is so high for a single book copy, I'll be importing them in bulk and selling them directly (Plus the cost is less since I get a discount when ordering my own book from the printer,) so I can write whatever you'd like on you copy.

Thanks again for the compliments, it's really encouraging and helps me get through the boring tasks that are part of the map creation process (Tracing things for instance.)

That's awesome Kevin! I'm sure you'll like the new version even more! I'm just starting a formal list right now; email me at preorder@algonquinmap.com with the number of copies you're interested in and I'll add you to my list. This isn't a formal commitment by you (ie I don't need any money yet,) but I'm just creating a list so that I can estimate quantities for when I order in bulk, and so that you can get a spot 'in line'. By the time I start accepting money and shipping out orders I'll have a PDF of the book online so that everyone can take a look at it as well as a price (Of course!)

Thanks Again,

Hey Jeffrey, I just read through the Nippissing River post and saw you have a logging road on it which I have travelled on before. How do you get that detailed info? I looked everywhere to find out about logging roads in the area.

Hmmm, is it on one of the AFA maps? This is the most current one in terms of roads:

http://www.algonquinforestry.on.ca/pdf/2008AWS_HuntMap_Oct1.pdf

There are a bunch of other places where I've supplemented that, but most roads are listed there. Next year I'm going to trace all the skid trails off Google Earth (I've already started.) There are a huge number (I realized when I started tracing... I've spent 4+ days and only completed the Lavaille, Bissett, Sec and Rain lake areas,,,

A little more info about the book...

March 9 2009, 10:00 AM

Hey Jeffrey,

I just shot you an email and I look forward to getting a copy of the map book. Great idea! I suggest you make a thread to announce that it is being made available, as I believe the demand will be much higher then you may have planned for.

A few questions for you...

1)Will the pages be laminated or waterproof?
2)Size and weight?
3)What format? I imagine the full map in the front cut in to 70+ sections, each pointing to the appropriate page number. Am I close?
4)When do you expect it to be available?

99.227.23.221

Re: A little more info about the book...

March 9 2009, 11:51 AM

Will do Jim,

I plan on making the formal announcement when I release the new map (I hadn't planned on telling people about the book until then, but some people had enquired about printed copies and.... well, you can figure out the rest.)

In terms of your questions:

1) Nope, it won't be waterproof or laminated. I'm just going with a print-on-demand company (And ordering in small quantities to save folks the $15US shipping charge that would apply if one were only purchasing a single copy.) That means that options are limited sad.gif. The good thing is that the pages are printed by a laser printer, meaning that if you bring a page or two (Or the entire book,) and it gets wet, the ink won't bleed, the paper will only get soggy (Again, it'd be nice if I could find a way to get it printed on a waterproof substrate but such is life.)

2) Size in pages is... 84. I don't have my proof yet, so I can't tell you weight. The dimensions are 8"x10" with .5" margins on all sides except the centre which has a .75" margin (Which makes each map 6.75"x9" or 9"x6.75")

3) You're exactly right. There's a table of contents and an index map pointing to 72 different submaps. Each submap was custom made (As opposed to being extracted from the big jpg) so that nothing gets cut off. The scale varies between pages, but is 1:80 000 for the most part with a few 1:60 000 sections and two 1:100 000 sections (The 1:100 000 sections cover places that wouldn't be of as much interest to those who paddle Algonquin; for instance, Lake of Bays is covered by on of those two maps.) When I release the new map and make copies of the book available for sale, the PDF of the book will be available online for download.

4) My timetable is like this... receive proof, approve proof, release map for download online, order 50 or so books and shipping supplies. Hopefully I'll receive the book proof this week.... that means that I'd post the map this week and order the 50 or so books this week as well. Obviously there's places that delays could happen in this timeline, but that's my hope.

Hi Jeffery,

50 books???? ONLY 50 books?? Man, you're gonna sell that many right here!! Those books are gonna take off like wildfire! But that's great!

And, I'm sure I threw my hat into the ring awhile ago when I first got wind of your map, but I guess this sis the official thread to request one, or three as the case may be.

And if you don't mind making a quick note to include any of Swede's or Raccoon's secret speckle locations, with a bright red dots [in keeping with the speckle trout theme] that would be ok by me too. wink.gif

I'll take three or four Jeffery!

Oh and, like the other poster had requested, I too would like a signed copy if you don't mind. Yeah you could throw in something like, "Shawn you have been an inspiration to me, since meeting you, and would like to go camping with you again (as long as you don't make me haul your stupid sleigh again)"...you know, something along those lines. happy.gif

But seriously, thank you very much for all your hard work. I can only imagine how much time and effort you have put into creating, which will undoubtedly be one of the most sought after back country maps in Ontario, this unique and extremely detailed map.

Thanks again Jeffery.

Shawn

Four!? You're my new best friend happy.gif. I don't really make any $$ off of them (That's not really my intent,) but what an honour dude. If you fish for specks, the new map should be your friend happy.gif - especially if you don't mind doing a bit of bushwhacking.

Thanks so much Shawn! I really appreciate your kind words. Hopefully I'll be able to see you again soon; it really would be awesome to hang out with you again. This time you must join us the campfire though :p.

Re: I'd like one to !!!

March 9 2009, 7:40 PM

Hey JeffM -

Capturing Google Earth features:
That's great you're going to 1:80K and will be capturing forest road (and other) features of Google Earth. If you are going to that level of detail, why don't you enlist the help from willing folks here to capture the skid trails and other old forest roads off of GE? That could, depending on how many people volunteer for the effort, help shave quite a bit of time off your own data gathering. I've captured many features off Google Earth including some logging roads for input into GPSr as Trails - it's quick, fun, accurate and very easy so anyone can help you in this. They can send you the kmz/kml files via email, you check'em over, edit if required (e.g. trace over the points) and add to your map via Illustrator. I'd certainly be willing to do this. Are u capturing the skid trails as double lined or single lined features?

Waterproof Inkjet/Laser Printing Paper:
There is waterproof printing paper for inkjet and/or laser technology printers. Standard letter, tabloid size and custom banner sizes are available. As the paper is expensive I only use it on the maps I know I will be reusing or have a special requirement for. You can also write on them with standard pens, unlike some waterproof map-covering liquids. Available here: www.waterproof-paper.com/inkjet-paper.shtml and in Canada: http://www.maptown.com/ (letter/tabloid only). I still keep these 'waterproof' printouts in proper tripping map cases, paper is paper and it will tear and blow away...

Microsoft
You should strongly consider going to the dark side in terms of O/S and importing your map (.AI file?) into a true GIS if your features are georeferencable (I know Illustrator supports it). Don't let your personal bias get in the way - setup at least one workstation with a 64 bit MS O/S with appropriate workstation-spec hardware. It is possible to convert your Map to a format readable by Garmin (MapSource + device), Google Earth, Lowrance, etc (there are converters available) but you'll likely have to work in MS.

Printing / Image Editor options:

I will be downloading the latest iteration of your map but will likely just zoom in/out to my preferred extent via Photoshop, capture a screen grab, editing the .jpg as required and printing it on tabloid or letter for use in the field on trips to the Park. Using that method you are guaranteed to capture your trip in the print(s) you require to the extent preferred - its what I do for all digital topos, satellite imagery, scans, or whatever. For those without Photoshop/PaintShopPro or other purchaseable image editor there are some very good free alternatives (and some even support MAC):

Gimp - http://gimp.org

PhotoPad - http://photopad.en.softonic.com

Paint.NET - http://www.getpaint.net

and of course MS Paint

I look forward to checking ur latest digital map creation to see what details you've included in the 1:80K

Re: I'd like one to !!!

March 9 2009, 8:11 PM

Hey SM!

I'm also going to be making 1:25000 topos at some point, but it'll take some time to do. Maybe for version 3? I dunno, we'll see. It's just something I was thinking about (Can anyone tell me if it'd be of interest?)

If anyone wants to help me trace skid trails, that'd be awesome! I'll have to find and post what I have so far, but that'd really help. I'd really appreciate it. To be honest, the only reason they didn't end up in this version is that it just got to be too boring tracing them. Like I mentioned, I must have spent 40+ hrs on it, and it really wears on you. In terms of capture, you just need to capture them twice; I can then duplicate the shapes in illustrator to provide the second stroke.

In terms of waterproof paper, anyone who wants to print the maps on waterproof paper themselves is free to do so. Anyone is always welcome to print any version of the map for themselves if they want, the printed versions I'm providing are only to make things easier for folks since 'commercial type' printing can be a pain to set up and can be really pricey and a lot of people have asked for a printed version to be made available. I'm obliging since I want to see it used as much as possible happy.gif. In the future I may get into printing on waterproof materials myself, but for now I don't have enough $$ to do so.

I know a bit about GIS since I've used it a bit for this newer map. Mostly I've used it for converting shp files to AI files, but I've also generated the hill shading, contour lines, and grid through it (The new map has contour lines and a UTM Grid :D.) In terms of converting for Garmin devices.. it's on my mind, but it's lower in priority. The same for an iPhone version. In terms of a georeferenced kml file... if someone wants to help me, that'd be great. I've georeferenced earlier test versions for grid calibration and peak portage elevation calculation, but it's just a pain to do. I usually use 300+ pts and it takes forever.

In terms of custom capturing of maps, I do the same (I use photoshop myself.) It's just a pain for some who don't know as much about image editors... that's why I have a new version of the map suited to that very task for those who want a simple and easy way to do that - a Flash version of the map. I'm using http://www.zoomify.com">zoomify> as the engine, meaning that one can navigate the map really quickly (ie it's really fast to load.)

Thanks so much for your long post :D. I'll get back to you and everyone else about tracing logging roads in the not too distant future. Thanks again for that idea, it'd really help me out (Making for a much better map for all of us :D )

Re: Yes...book me in for a book!

March 9 2009, 9:27 PM

Hey Aaron,

Thanks for the kind words dude! I really appreciate it. It's comments like that which make it worthwhile.

In terms of the price.... I can only estimate right now since I don't know if I'll need to make any changes to the proof, etc, but I'm expecting it to be ~$20+$2.50 shipping and packaging. Shipping of course wouldn't apply for anyone picking it up at an AA gathering, my place in Toronto, etcetc.

The cost is = to the cost to me + shipping to me + contingency + a little bit to pay for free copies for people like Jake Pigeon from Brent. For what it's worth, my intent isn't to make a whole bunch of money off of this, rather to make it more readily available in print happy.gif. Rather than telling everyone to order from the Print-On-Demand company I'm going through, I'm importing the books myself since when bought in bulk the shipping price to Canada drops to $2 from $15. I wish the price could be lower, but at least it isn't too bad compared to other good Algonquin books (I'm looking at my copy of Canoeing Algonquin Park by Donald Llyod beside me.)

Thanks again for your interest!

Data Capture

March 10 2009, 12:00 AM

Hey JeffM -

1:25K - I'd be very interested. What other features would you have added to this scale compared to your existing 1:80Ks, or would you just have some features identified as double lines that are now just single lines? Are you using data layers sourced from OBM in your new map? You can download vector/point/etc data to your hearts content in various projections, and OBM contains some of the most expansive and accurate spatial data I've seen.

Let me know when you're ready to receive kml files captured off of GE, and what areas you'd like to cover. As you said it is a very repetitive process however it's fast and fun, and a bit here and there will really add up - especially if you have many data gatherers. Unfortunately there are large areas where the satellite imagery from GE over AP is very poor: cloud cover/bad resolution/heavily rasterized. In these poor coverage areas is unlikely anything as small as forest trails/roads can be identified and captured. Until they replace these tracts with improved imagery many such features will have to remain uncaptured from GE. To my knowledge there are no other free satelite imagery sources that provide the scale, format, type and detail that GE offers.

Depending on how deep you want to take the map - you can elicit help with people carrying GPSr in the park with them and capturing 2D portage Trails, campsites coordinates, etc. If you are using the campsite location from the FoAP CRMap as guidance, you know there are many errors (missing campsites, campsite offsets, campsites identified on map but non-existent, etc). However that's a lot of work for you in the short term at least to correct for all of that.

Re: Data Capture

March 10 2009, 12:15 AM

Hey SM,

1:25K is just something I've been think about, not something I've started. My idea was to have one for each lake (ie the 'Hogan' sheet, the 'Big Crow' sheet, etc.) In terms of features, there probably wouldn't be much new (Can you even think of anything new to add? Mark Scarlett suggested beaver dams which I think I'll do in the future, but I'm out of ideas other that.) I don't use OBM, rather I use NRVIS (An MNR dataset.) As far as I can tell OBM is just as good as NRVIS... NRVIS is really accurate as far as I've seen in the last year of using the map. That being said, if you can find places where OBM is better than NRVIS, I'll switch over. In some ways I think it'd be worth starting from 'scratch' in terms of the base layers (In order to improve accuracy since the techniques I originally used.. could be improved upon a bit,) but it's just a pain. I'll probably go for it at some point though.

In terms of gather kml of the roads, yea you need the new 10m to 1 pixel imagery for it to be achievable. I've looked into satellite imagery and can't find anything than what GE uses, paid or free.

I accept and use campsite and portage location tags. Look at the 2345m portage from Cedar twds Catfish as an example. Bo very kindly gave me a GPS last year, but I haven't been able to get it to work yet. It's something to do with a change-over around '99... I've been looking into other units, but I don't have the $$.

In terms of the locations I do use, I use a heavily corrected FoA dataset. I've personally got about 350 days of trips under my belt which I use to correct the data, plus I've had a lot of people email me in corrections. Believe me, I've been really really screwed by bad FoA data. Just as an example, West Harry is the wrong shape on the FoA map. Because it shows two bays rather than three, we went down the wrong one!!!

Hey Barry,

Only seems fitting since you have a quote on the back lol! Gee, these first 50 are almost all spoken for and I haven't even posted the new map :s. What a vote of confidence! Don't worry, I'm sure you'll all like it. Plus, this time it's been approved by two Marks so that I don't do any more stupid colour schemes.

Jeffery,

It does appear that you may have underestimated the demand for your maps, I would like 2-3 as well, if possible.

Great job by the way, I could only imagine the time it would take to complete such a task. I assume it is a labour of love, however.

Thanks for your efforts, many like-minded enthusiasts will appreciate/benefit from your hard work.

Iain: I've got you on the list now happy.gif. Don't worry about paying more - there's no need. If you ever have corrections or suggestions, I'll take them though happy.gif. If you want to spend extra $, it'd be really great if you donated them to the ABR (See my signature.)

Goodfella76: I didn't want to be presumptuous happy.gif. Not to worry, I'll put in for second and possibly third orders after the first fifty are sent out. The real reason I'm buying in quantities of more than 50 is that I can't afford it. As I mentioned to Shawn of N.B., I don't have a job beyond my school work and this map, so my resources are limited. And yea, it is a labour of love happy.gif. Generally when I work on it I work about 10 hours a day.. and I've probably put a few hundred days into it over the last 2.5 years.

Thanks to you both for your messages! Send me your email addresses for reference if you don't mind.

To everyone else: There will be more copies available, but any further orders will be part of the second run (Though I have a couple reserved for Sean of Ajax and Dogbyte if they want them.) That being said, if you're picking your copies up for the opener, I should have the second batch of books in by then so it shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you so much for your interest!

Re: 2 copies please ..

March 10 2009, 1:57 PM

Jeffery,

If I may suggest an option here...

Perhaps you could set up a PayPal (or something similar) account so that you can receive advanced payment, from those of us that are committed in purchasing your maps, prior to your order. This way you will not have to tie up all of your spare cash in one purchase of 50, and alleviate some of the financial burden on you. This will also enable you to purchase a larger order using "our" advanced funds to assist in payment.

I realize you're not completely certain to the exact penny, but surely you could give an accurate guesstimate. Only speaking for myself, I am not concerned with nickles and dimes, let a lone a couple of loonies difference. The cause and value of these maps far outweighs any small monetary fluctuation from now till then.

Again, just my humblest of humble opinion. happy.gif

However you decide to receive funds, let me know and I will send it to you asap.

Cheers
Shawn

Re: 2 copies please ..

March 10 2009, 3:07 PM

Baloney!

Think of it this way, if you had an online store front and was able to ship them out to prospective buyers landing on your site, they would have to purchase these maps before you shipped them correct? And even the transaction would take a few days (you don't want to be running to the postal outlet everyday so you would indicate that you ship on Mondays or something like that) before you would be able to actually ship them out. So, what's the difference?

Imagine how many orders you would have in one week of just forum/ word of mouth advertising? Then if you were to mail out at the end of each week, how much money would you have collected in any one week? People always pay in advance over the Internet. How many times have you purchased something on the net and received your item before paying for it? Yeah, that's what I thought.

People will line up for this. Just wait until word really get's out. You're gonna be swamped!

Ask and ye shall receive. Once again, I bet you'll be surprised. Trust me happy.gif

Cheers
Shawn

Re: 2 copies please ..

March 10 2009, 6:15 PM

Hey Shawn,

But at least I'd have the books on hand so I would know that I could drop them in an envelope and into the post box right away. Basically I'll ask for the $ in advance o shipping, but not in advance of holding the books in my hands.

The other thing is that I don't know how long it takes to order from the printer. So, let's say I go order 60 books and all 60 are spoken for. I collect $ before the books arrive. Then 2 have defects. That means I have money from two people who I don't have books for.... not very cool.

What do you think?

Tom - I use Firefox (v3.0.7) and Google Chrome (v1.0.154.48) on my main Workstaion, both can post fine in AA. Close Firefox and reopen it, likely something cached that is giving you some problems. There are a few websites that don't function properly in these browsers (middleware doesn't install), but 99% of them do.

JeffM - just a suggestion: create a new dedicated thread with the first posting identifying the people and quantity of books they've requested.

Name - - - - - - - - - - - - Quantities requested

Tom Thompson - - - - - - - - - - 2
Stephen Harper - - - - - - - - - - 4
etc

People can look it over and confirm the numbers listed and it allows a clean start for others to post their request.
