The old portage does (On the NW shore.) The new one doesn't. If you don't mind walking the logging road it might be easier (Less hills,) but you might appreciate the scenery of the newer portage-through-the-forest.
p.s. just to confirm, the west side of Radiant is the shallow end correct?

I had a fellow tell me once that he walked some of that road, as he was recommended to give it a try. Well guess what?
It was high summer, and he boiled his arse off, walking on that road. If the sun is shining, stick to the forest.
Can't sleep, thinking about this trip. Not quite healthy enough to risk a winter outing yet, so I might as well dream about this May trip in the meantime...

Bleh! This year I have school until late-May or early June. There better be a lot of weekend AA trips until then!
You know Jeff, I really do feel sorry for you about your lessor possible amount of canoeing time this year. Last year was what, 60 days or more in the park.

Just above 60, I'd need to count.. maybe toward 65 counting the winter trip. I'm thinking of going in June again this year (Like two years ago.) Feel like questioning my sanity? lol
Hi Shawn , I've heard the portage is better and certainly more scenic it runs closer to the river and you never know there may be some spots to cast a line out into the river. The road route is actually a little longer and we would have to watch out for logging trucks .

Yup, I agree with the scenic route for sure. And I know from reading Markus's TR's that the first portage east of Philip is very nice too.

It's on a very very old tote rd and hence is an easy walk. If you talk on the logging road right by the end of the portage for a few minutes you can see a large logged area.
You have to bushwhack though about 10 meters of bush. as the end of the road, is blocked with overgrown trees and brush...but the field that Jeffrey talks about is there.

Philip Lake farm
March 13 2009, 1:14 PM
The 1075m portage out of Philip used to go right through a farmstead site. When I first saw it in the mid 60's the house and horse barn were still partially standing. The clearing was at the end of a nice flat road that branched off the main logging truck road that runs along the Little Madawaska. When the upstream end of the portage was moved downstream, you took a trail to the farm road and turned right to head toward the logging road. If you turned left on the farm road it pretty quickly took you to the farm clearing. There were also modern logging buildings at the end of the portage--small, white, and clapboarded. I remember because a bear ran away as we came to them. All of the buildings are long gone, but it seems like an idyllic area.
