On SM's suggestion I'm making a new thread to list the people who have reserved a spot in line for the book edition of my new map (Both of which will be released in the very near future.) As I mentioned in the other post no money is due until the books are ready to ship and you're more than welcome to change your mind, but this will give me an idea of the demand.
I'm distributing them directly rather than having the printing company do it since the shipping cost to Canada drops from $16US per book to $2US/book. The price of the book will be approximately $20 per copy and can probably be shipped by lettermail which means shipping won't cost too much. The cost of the book itself is based on the cost to me, the shipping to me, a contingency amount and a little bit of $ to help pay for free copies for people who I feel should have a copy for free (ie Jake Pigeon from Brent.) Basically, I don't want to get rich off of this, rather I want to see the map get more use .
A lot of people have asked for a printed copy, and this time around I'm arranging for books to be printed and full sized maps to be printed (Do note that the full sized maps aren't cheap - approx. $37US for a 3'x4' map) - this is just what the printing company charges. Hopefully everything should be ready really soon. I'm hoping to release everything at once (The print and downloadable editions that is.)
Anyways, if you could confirm that what I have written below is right, that'd be great (It's good to be organized!) If you're not on the list you're more than welcome to wait until later to see if you're interested, but I'd encourage you to post your request or shoot me an email so you can at least get a spot in line. I'll be respecting the order that the books were requested in when distributing them and will only be ordering 50 copies at a time (I'm a poor uni student.)
I saw your list, I checked it twice, I saw some folks who are naughty and nice, but my name was no where to be found... Throw me into the mix for 2 copies.
Thanks.

Wow, what a response!
Paddlin: Awesome, I've updated the list .
Sean: Awesome dude. I really appreciate the copy you got me last year, so don't worry about paying for them k?
Barbara: Yea, we're almost up to 100. Basically I'll buy 50, ship them out and then buy another 50, ship them out, etc .
MikeL: Sure dude, you're on the list now . Thanks for the compliments!
Pete: Of course . I'm going to encourage people to pick it up from me in Toronto or in Algonquin whereever possible - I always like taking the time to talk to AA folks as well as saving on shipping costs
Andrew G.: Great! Send me an email so I have your email address.
Jamie: Will do!
Barbara: Yea, I have a list . I've PDFed all the related emails in the last few days and made a text file for each AA user who posted. I've then titled each file with each person's position 'in line, their name and the number of copies they want.
AZ: No problem! It's just to keep my records updated . I'll be sure to keep you updated. THe thing about making $$ off of it is that I want to keep the map a communal project.. the thing that's so great about the map is that everyone contributes (ie telling me about any mistakes they find.) As it stands, any of the 'contingency' money built into the book cost that isn't used on printing will be used to acquire resources to enhance the map. This way I won't have to worry about 10$ on a new historical map for scanning and integration with 'my' map.
Goose: Sure! I've made note of that . Thanks for the compliments!
Matt: Awesome . I've added your name to the list.
karior: Done . I told Markus the answers to your questions about the book and it's materials.
Sal: Sure .
Gordie: The problem with a publisher is that that'd potentially increase the cost since there'd need to be a profit.
Barbara (Again!): Thanks for the table
Dave Greenham: Thanks Dave! Done.
Aaron: Thanks for the email . Sent a response.
Thanks all!
Someone asked about the full sized maps somewhere.... A quick update, the proofs for the full sized map are arriving today . As soon as the book proof arrives I'll post the new map, allow full sized map orders and 'formally' announce the book (In the sense that I'll post the digital version, post it to the website, and publicize it )
The printed full sized maps will be ready really soon (Rolled!) The full size maps will be available in 8 sizes: 36x48 full sized, 44x56.8 full sized (Not really small enough for on the trail, but nice for a wall,) 33x48 east half or west half - a smaller scale map which provides more detail - good for the trail. A cheaper 22x34(?) 1/4 area map.
As you already know I am definitely confirmed for four books but want you to know that although I would like 4 books, as long as I get one from the original order, I can wait for you to mail out the remaining books when ever the second order is received. This way, 3 other people waiting in line will receive their highly anticipated book and not have to wait unnecessarily.
Also, please put me on the list for one map, regular size - similar size of the APP map.
Thanks again doood!
Cheers
Shawn

Sure Shawn, that's really kind of you. I'll probably send two the first time since (I think) I can fit two into an envelope.
Like I said, I'll be receiving the proof of the full sized map today .
Congrats Jeffrey, looks like this is a successful project. I'm sure you'd know more about it than me, but be careful about profits. I don't know if Creative Commons allows that, plus the sources you took the information from. Again, I"ve got not idea.
you'll let us know when the next order is available right? For now I'll hold off on placing an order until your accounts are "stable" again

Re: My Algonquin Map (Book Edition)
March 12 2009, 2:45 PM
James: Done!
Bryce: Thanks for the congratulations. In terms of CC... let me discuss what that means .
The CC license allows me to surrender some of the rights that copyright automatically grants me, for instance the ability to restrict distribution. Rather than restricting free distribution I want to encourage it - so rather than prohibiting you from copying my work, I'm asking you to do so. In return I'd really appreciate suggestions and corrections, but there is absolutely no obligation to do so.
There are however a few restrictions. #1 is that you can't use the map for commercial purposes under the CC license I'm using - that's not to say that you can't use it for commercial purposes at all, but it does mean that I'd need to grant you special permission under different terms. Hopefully you can understand the reasons behind that... really though, I'm not against commercial use, but it'd require different terms.
#2 You must "Attribute" the work. That just means give me credit... really, all I want is a link to the map site to allow more people to get the map .
#3 You must "Share Alike" - this means that any modifications you make or any other derivative works you make must be shared under similar terms. Hopefully this makes good sense too...
I know you didn't ask for a primer on the CC license, but I just thought I'd write it up anyways . Basically, I can grant different people different licenses. So, I grant the general public a CC Attribution-Noncommercial-Shake Alike license. This means you can print a copy or 12 for yourself or your friends or w.e. else you'd like but you can't use it commercially. For the book, I'm granting myself a different license, but I'm granting users of the book the same license that the digital version carrie (ie feel free to photocopy it and share it, etc)
In terms of the sources, in the US and Canada as well as many other places, only creative works are subject to copyright restrictions. Facts aren't. That means that the selection of facts, the symbols used for facts, the layout of the map, the boundaries of the map etc are all copyrightable as long as there is some creativity involved. This also means that if someone duplicates my campsite data and uses it for their map commercially that's probably okay (Assuming they use a non-creative selection, for instance all of the ones in Algonquin Park.) Make sense?
Yea, I'll keep everyone up to date on the status of the map and the book. Don't worry!
I am confirmed for three copies of the book. I would also be interested in a larger sized version for wall mounting.
Let me know the when/how to do this. Do you require my e-mail address for ease of communication? Whatever is easiest for you, let me know.
Thanks again,
Goodfella,
Stoney Creek, Ontario

If you could send me your email address that'd be great . Since the book proof is still a good few days off I might just post the digital version this weekend. Assuming the full sized proof looks good, they'll also be available for sale at the same time.
Ahh, makes sense. Just didn't want to see you get into trouble, or FOA comin' after you for any reason.
I'll add you on Facebook so that you can toss me a message or email whenever the second batch of maps/books come in.

no problem, it's good to take the time to explain. For what it's worth I have a section on my current website about all of this stuff (The section titled 'Copyright.') Take a look if you'd like.
I would like to order a copy of the book to start please. If I can talk my wife into it I will get a large wall map......I have a laminated rolled map from 96/97 on my wall already and your's is 10 x better.

Stainless: Sure Stainless, will do.
Rob L: Wow, that's nice of you to pass the info on for me. Thanks!
Tom C: lol! Thanks for the compliments! Buy whatever you want whenever you want it . No pressure. I only started the list for the books since people kept asking about them - I figured "Oh well, a couple of people might be interested and this way I won't forget who wants a copy when they're available." At least I don't have to worry that I won't sell the copies I order!
I have a quick update. The proof of the book was just ordered (The first time my design was rejected for a technical reason after I was told it was okay.) The good thing is that as long as it looks good, I'm on track for ordering the first 50 copies at that point.
In terms of the wall maps, I received my proofs today and they look really, really nice.
My plan is to make the wall maps and digital version available this weekend - yay!
Right on, can't wait to check it out Jeffery! C'mooooon weekend!
Cheers

Hey Jeff,
Thanks again for the making such an incredible tool. It will benefit the Algonquin community for years. I did a write up about the map and the sale of the map book on my blog this morning.
I am also confirming my intent to purchase two...yes TWO of your awesome map books!
...and judging by the number of orders, I consider myself lucky to get one! The waiting list must be approaching what....40?
Thanks Jeffrey, Trips north have now become a regular occurrence. I've been working in Nunavut 50% of my time since last fall, fascinating new world for us. It really is 'the last frontier,' a must see for any adventurous folks.

I will be posting my full review of the map book on my website and at AA soon but I wanted to pop in and give Jeffrey a public pat on the back. The word terrific doesn't come close to how great a job I think you've done in creating this invaluable resource. Way to go!
