Looking to trip the 1st half of August 2009. Need advice on traveling Head Lake thru Head Creek (North East) and turning West on the Madawaska River back to Cache Lake. Is this advisable?
A friend of mind did that route last summer. No problem. You just have to be watching where to turn back. If you miss the turn you go to Lake of Two Rivers.

I have paddled down Head Creek from Head Lake and then upstream on the Madawaska to Cache lake a few time, although they have been May trips.
The paddle takes longer then portaging the 1640m, but does have some nice views. The beaver dams are such that you need fairly high boots if you want to stay dry.
This waterway has quite a few twists and turns, so having some rocker on the boat is a great advantage. My straight tracking 17' boat requires some muscling from the stern to make a few of the turns.
