Someone had asked me to plot the locations of the cell towers on my map so they might be able to get a general idea of range... Off the top of my head I know of the one's in the west gate flag pole, the one by the Whiskey Raps trail, and that there's one by the visitor's centre (Not sure where exactly.) Can anyone help me complete the list?
I don't know, but Industry Canada says developers need to provide the locations of all planned towers, so maybe if you call Bell they'll tell you.

tower is not synonymous with service
April 17 2009, 2:43 PM
unfortunately in hilly areas.
I am looking at my service providers local tower. Its on a high hill. and I am down low on a lake and have nada service.
Best not to depend on that thing for tripping.
Its funny how weather has an impact on cell service. Right at the base of Mt Washington there is a hostel. Buildings dont move. Sometimes there is service and sometimes there is not.

Re: Cell Tower Locations?

As far as I can find out, the tower system is completed from Huntsville to Barry's Bay, all along highway 60.
Does Bell's website have a map of "service areas"? Would they be willing to give out the locations of the towers, after they supposedly went to great effort to "disguise" them?
Just thinking out loud here.

Cell tower locations

I can't say how accurate this is but it shows a total of 5 cell towers in Algonquin Park and I remember hearing from Bell that they had 5 planned towers to cover HWY60 in Algonquin
Wow, Randy, that's one of the most depressing things I've ever seen.
But it clearly demonstrates why we got absolutely no cellphone reception just outside Whiteshell PP. We were in that rather large area of no towers. LOL I thought that being out in the Land of No Trees or Hills would guarantee a clear signal.
Not exactly impressed was I with my first (only) cellphone experience. LOL

Huntsville's cell tower
April 18 2009, 12:14 AM
It's actually funny that Highway 60 running through the park has 5 times more cell towers than Huntsville does.
As far as I know Huntsville has only one Cell tower. I was chatting with a Bell surveyor last summer they have plans to ad another cell tower in Huntsville. The only reason they are adding another Cell tower to Huntsville is the Cell phone use coming from the Huntsville Highschool comes close to maxing out the bandwith that the one tower can handle, so Huntville second Cell tower will be located somewhere (not going to say because Bell is trying to hide it like many of the other towers) near the Highschool. It's pretty crazy to think that more kids in Highschool are using cell phones than all of the rest of the Huntsville area.
Kids and their cell phones.
My 17 year old son even has one but I'm still to cross that line myself.
It's also funny to think that our staff are currently setting up the Opeongo Store (it's not open yet but will be for the last weekend of April). The phone lines haven't been turned on yet at the Opeongo Store but if they drive to the end of the Opeongo road they can get cell service from Highway 60. Oh and they have the internet up and running there too. So they kind of have Cell service and Highspeed internet but no landline yet.. lol
Algonquin has more cell towers because they were required to keep them to a minimal height (i.e. not much above tree tops) in order to minimize their visual impact in the park. So they're much smaller than standard... therefore require more to provide the coverage.
They are:
West Gate
Whiskey Rapids Trail
Smoke Lake Hill
Lake of Two Rivers (down and across from the outdoor theatre)
and there most be another one further east but at the moment its location escapes me.

Canadian Cell Tower Locations Map

The following site has a map with the location of cell towers in Algonquin Park - use the left nav buttons to scroll into the area. As far as I can see, only Rogers exists in Algonquin which is odd as I have used Bell and Telus in the park recently.http://www.ertyu.org/steven_nikkel/cancellsites.html Hope this helps

I went and found another map that seems to be more accurate - let me find the link again...
While I'm not 100% sure, I'm almost certain that Rogers is in the process of installing towers along the corridor. In fact the new tower at the Visitor's Centre, again if I am not mistaken, is a Rogers one.
This past winter I got 5 bars on Fork Lake, as well as digital internet reception (I was able to post to AA even), while that past summer on the same lake I got none.
