Hey SBA ....

I hope you will be able to join us on Rose this weekend; I'm anxious to see your beauty and its recent spider crack.

Sorry I didn't make it up after the Jan. weekend camping with Markus, Jeffrey, Sean, Shawn and J-Wolf, but things got busy. Did you get any more snow shoeing in? FYI I have NO intention of bringing them, or my ice picks, this weekend, so yes the ice will be out.

Also, any idea how the ice is in Novar? I heard my lake was 75% free, but I have a feeling that was more a prediction then report.

Ice out in Huntsville

April 21 2009, 10:04 PM

Unfortunately Huntsville isn't a good gauge as the Muskoka River flows through Huntsville and the river is open most of the winter if not all of it. I've paddled in Huntsville in the middle of January when it's -20c out. It's all the head water lakes in the park that water mostly flow out of with very little or no flow into them like Opeongo, Canoe, Smoke, LaMuir, Tim, Ralph Bice and Louisa.

Huntsville's been open for sometime.. it was well over a month ago when the two ladies went through the ice with tragic results.

Here on the West side of Algonquin Park we were treated to +10c highs (lows still dip down to the negative numbers over night but just. It also rained most of the day and it's been windy. The weather man is calling for temperatures in the high 20's in the hear future so it's only a matter of time before all the ice is gone.

There is open water out there just there is still ice covered lakes too so it really makes planning an open route difficult.

Hey Jeff P

I'm thinking maybe a day trip to Rose Island on Saturday but if the weather is bad & windythen I think the canoe will stay on top of the car. but I'll try my best to meet up with you guys.

As for snowshoeing. I only got out one more time to the track & tower trail in March but the conditions weren't that great. I spent the rest of the winter either ice fishing (not in APP of course) or x-country skiing.

I havent been up to Novar in some time so I am not sure of ice conditions. Sorry Dude.

Randy - I don't think Rosseau, Fairy, Vernon, Penfold, and Pen lake have been ice free very long at all. Just this past weekend.

From the Bracebridge Examiner of March 18th:

It was Saturday, just after 5:30 p.m. when the two-seat utility vehicle carrying Bray, 46, and Jolene, 12, plunged through the ice after hitting a pressure crack in a channel between Tobin Island and North Bohemia Island, near Ted Rogers cottage on Lake Rosseau.

The vehicle had also been carrying one other person, Brays 13-year-old niece Jeni Robinson, who was able to get off as the mishap occurred.

Barbara - I am aware of this accident. It was a big upset to the muskoka community & the village of Windermere.

Lake Rosseau's ice when out on Sunday & I got some canoe in too.

I figured you would be aware of it, SBA. As am I from the constant news coverage on the local Barrie "A" Channel.

Others may not be, though.

Barbara - it did get a little hard to watch after a while didn't it. I had to stop reading the paper and watching the news for a couple of weeks after. It's still in the back of my mind and a hard one to shake.
