Unfortunately Huntsville isn't a good gauge as the Muskoka River flows through Huntsville and the river is open most of the winter if not all of it. I've paddled in Huntsville in the middle of January when it's -20c out. It's all the head water lakes in the park that water mostly flow out of with very little or no flow into them like Opeongo, Canoe, Smoke, LaMuir, Tim, Ralph Bice and Louisa.
Huntsville's been open for sometime.. it was well over a month ago when the two ladies went through the ice with tragic results.
Here on the West side of Algonquin Park we were treated to +10c highs (lows still dip down to the negative numbers over night but just. It also rained most of the day and it's been windy. The weather man is calling for temperatures in the high 20's in the hear future so it's only a matter of time before all the ice is gone.
There is open water out there just there is still ice covered lakes too so it really makes planning an open route difficult.
