has anyone been up to Opeongo lake and if so what shape is the ice . I heard from a visitor to the store that people were walking on the ice in the bay on Monday the 23rd. I dont like the sound of that as we have a trip planed for the first weekend in May. Anyone with any up to date info let me know please as holidays will have to be adjusted!! Thanks.

Opeongo Ice conditions

April 24 2009, 10:08 PM

As of earlier today:

South Arm of Ope is passable depending on wind. East Arm has some ice floating and is 20% slush. North Arm is about 30% slush.

Ice out is taking longer than normal this season but I really feel that it's going to all go away really quickly. With the warm weather in the forecase and the fact that a lot of it is more slush than ice it's not going to last long.

And if the boys playing Icebreaker with the watertaxi at Opeongo have anything to do with it, it's all gonna be gone real soon.

I hope so I have a 8AM water taxi out on May 1 so everything should be a go as long as the fish are also in agreement with this

Ice Out conditions as of April 27th

April 27 2009, 11:16 AM

I just spoke with our Watertaxi guys at our Opeongo Lake location and as of today the ice is pretty much gone on Lake Opeongo. Free travel to all the portages is now possible. Both our boats and Opeongo Outfitters boats are in the water now.

Canoe lake is also reporting ice out conditions, so I would have to say that Algonquin Park is pretty ice free as of this past weekend. Seems the wind and rain did a good job at clearing out the remainder of the ice that was still holding on.

I'm sure if you look hard enough you may find some ice here and there still but the major waterways should all be open now. There's still some standing snow in my backyard.

Gord has a great OPEN WATER posting on the Algonquin Outfitters Blog from this past weekend.
