I'll be going through the same area in August and while I have no answer to your question I have my own related questions.
Are there any suggestions on the best way to Kingscote from Toronto and outfitter suggestions.
Thanks,
Andrew.

Three of the walk-in sites are on the water, and they are great.....three others are opposite the water, and aren't quite as great. The lakeside sites fill up fast as the weekend approaches.
On the lake itself, most of the sites are pretty good. The ones on the island are good. There are a couple toward the north end of the lake on the east side that get lots of sun, although they are well-treed.
A good day trip is to take the short drive over to the High Falls. A great spot to go on a hot day.
Kingscote is truly a "hidden gem".....I hope it stays that way. No traffic to fight on the way there, and few people on the lake.

If possible, try to grab site #6 as it has a nice view of the lake, as for all the other sites, personaly, I would prefer a paddle in site, but with young kids it can be difficult.

Route to Kingscote
June 8 2009, 8:12 PM
Take Hwy 400/11 to Orillia. Take Hwy 12 east at Orillia, and travel over the bridge at the Narrows. Turn left (north) past the bridge on Rama. Pass on the temptation to hit the Casino, and turn right after a few minutes onto Cty Rd 45 (Monck Rd).
45 turns into 503 at Sebright...continue on it. Keep going through little places like Norland and Kinmount, staying with 503 the whole time. Continue through Gooderham nad Tory Hill.
Shortly after Tory Hill, turn onto 648, and keep going through Wilberforce and Harcourt. Right around Harcourt is where you start to see the AP signs (actually, you might see them a little sooner). The campground opposite the park entrance is where you pick up your permit (unless that's changed).
It's about 2 1/2 hrs from Orillia to Kingscote. A very scenic drive, with next to no traffic, giving you a differend view of Ontario. The ice cream place at the lights in Norland is a great place to stop.
Now, Google maps suggests that you take the 401 to 28, then follow it to just south of Bancroft. Depending on the traffic, that might be a little bit shorter. The route we take is definitely more scenic, although you would also factor in the 400 traffic. We're coming from the west, so the route through Orillia works best for us.
A lot of 2 lane driving, but often we don't see another car for several miles.
Either way, the destination is worth the trip.

The second site west of the portage on the north end of the lake has a really nice sunning rock. The swimming looked pretty good as well.
