Guess it's a good thing I'll be packing bug jackets then.

Please tell me there isn't going to be deer flies and horse files. Isn't it a little too early for them?

We're all set for 'War with the bugs', we've got three different kinds of bug spray (all with 30% deet), mosquito coils, mosquito stakes, citronella candles, after bite, an 8' x 8' bug tent, and we have the bug shirts. And if it gets too much for us we'll just troll the entire weekend.

Good luck to all those that venture out in the wilds this w/e.

I was up in Haliburton just west of the village and the bugs were bad as soon as we left the car but didn't seem too bad shortly after this for the rest of the afternoon. We were out in the open the majority of time, it may have been bad in the bush.

We were on Little Eagle last weekend and the mosquitoes were just starting it seemed. The black flies were bad at times but not very often. Worse when we were on the water. On the portages and the campsite they weren't bad at all. We didn't wear the nets on the way out at all.

Thank you for putting things in perspective Fred. You're absolutely right, now IS the time to go to the park! I spent hours looking out my office window wishing I could get out of there and go camping. Now I have the time and I'm gonna do it. I'll try and put together a week long trip. That should improve my mood somewhat....

I've known for about a year that I would have eight weeks off in a row this summer and planned/daydreamed a lot leading up to it. Now that it's here.. I know it will pass too quickly. There will be lots of office windows to look out from... the Park is great for clearing your head and reminding yourself what makes you happy! Hope you can manage a getaway...

Depending on what your tolerance/comfort level + existing mood is, the bugs imo aren't too bad this year. Blackflies are out in swarms now but only really a nuisance along shore and lee-side of islands. They weren't an issue at all once out on the open lake (irregardless of wind) or at the campsite. Of course these little guys disapear when the sun goes down.

Mosquitos are plentiful along portages (packing/unpacking the vessels they can be a nuisance), and a few on the campsites, but again just a minor inconvenience. Very few out on the lakes, barely noticeable imo, again irregardless of the wind.

Deerflies are out now, but very few in number still, they are just starting their season.

No-seeums are out too, but again very few in number at this time of year.

No sign of horseflies or stable flies yet, they are more a July-August nuisance.

I dress in long-sleeved wool or fleece (top to bottom), including feet. Use muskol only sparingly around neck/forehead/ears and through the hair + a few daps along clothing spots like shoulders/knees. Baby oil is useful on the blackflies - smear it over exposed skin areas, but you'll need to reapply that every few hours.

Last week
There are still bugs but I didn't think they where as bad as I expected. They where bad on our rain day and on the muddy portages. The sun was out for most of our trip so it seemed to keep them away. Only had 1-spot on the tim river where the black flies where bad. There was always mosquitoes around. The horse or dear flies where sometimes annoying. I think during our portages was the worst areas for bugs. They always seemed to attack my elbows where you can't see them.

They are still around in the evenings. It's almost July they should be gone by now!

Place a long piece of grass with a seedhead or piece of pine branch in your hat so the seedhead or greens on the branch point behind you and flies will hover around that instead of your face. The bouncing of the end attracts flies and keeps them away from your face. For the branch, remove all the green leaves from the stem an take off side shoots - keep the greens on the end.

For your thanks donate to AA or ABR.

Bugs

July 2 2009, 9:30 PM

I just came out from a quick trip yesterday on the east side (Achray Rd area)
and must say :

1. The bugs were great during the rain sad.gif / happy.gif Tues and Weds
but when it stopped raining around 6 pm Tues at least I found that
on the island site the bugs only started to come back in force once it was
sunset ( 9 pm-9:15 pm)

2. In the morning they were OK.. Just a few on the lake or island

But when I end up at the takeout site.. ( noonish)
The bugs were in force again.

Guess this means , get a good open / breezy site to minimize the effect
he bugs which are there will have on you.
( mosquitoes, deer flies and horse flies... were bothersome at times!)
Seems the Black Flies were scarce and perhaps
it was the rain and cooler temps after the rain ???

Raccoon's description is accurate for Access #2 over the earlier part of the week as well. It was either rain or mosquitos, not both. Blackflies very occasionally. Mossies were heaviest at the parking area when I was leaving but I had some Muskol handy and that worked. Now, I was covered head to toe in rain gear still so they may have been bombing my face because that's all there was. There were also a ton in the van which we cleared out going down the road with the windows open.
