We are planning to take our 1st ever trip to Algonquin late August / early September, doing a trip of 6 days, with perhaps a nice rest day too. One of us is novice, the other experienced canoer. We would love any advice about routes and campsites. Many thanks!

Algonquin is huge! In order to help you, it might help if you could tell us where you want to start your trip from, i.e. the west side, the east side, the highway 60 corridor, etc...

I'm sure once you provide that information you'll get a lot of suggestions. And by the way, you'll fall in love with Algonquin, so be prepared!

This site is a fantastic resource to begin with...check out the "triplogs" and "interior" tabs for a plethora of information and I would recommend ordering the "Friends of Algonquin Canoe Routes Map". This too is full of valuable information to get you started.

The park is large and there are thousands of trip alternatives but be sure not to bite off more than you can chew...aim at maybe 4-6 hours of travel per day with a rest day or two thrown in at your deepest point in the park. Also, while there is much appeal for Canoe Lake as a kick-off point to start a trip, it is often very busy and detracts from that "interior" feel with the larger number of people you'll run into. For real solitude, if that's what you desire, look for lakes with only one campsite on them or lakes that are on a deadend of a canoe route.

Also, ask plenty of questions as there are many here who are more than willing to give our two cents. Answers are free, correct or accurate ones may have a surcharge, however!
