Your Dream Algonquin Trip

Hi all,

Well I've had the map book out and the routes map up on the wall in the garage and I've been looking at all the different route options, and thinking of planning trips for the fall and next year.
Then I started to think what if there were no restrictions what trips I'd plan.

So I thought that this might be a good discussion topic, probably not the first topic, but hey why not bring it up again. Also with all this wet weather, it's a perfect time to dream.

So what are your dream trips? Whether it be a 3 month excursion into the wilds or just a few days on a specific lake. I'd love to hear what you've got. If you do pick a specific lake could you please say why that lake (research for future trips).

This would be an interesting contest - the winner gets to do it! Just kidding.

So please tell me (us) what your dream Algonquin park trip would be.

Thanks for sharing.

Take care,
Aaron

My dream trip.... hmmm... one where it doesn't rain for most of the trip!

Seriously though. I'd like to do the trip from Kingscote to Brent and back again... but stretched over several weeks.

Then...and now.

When I was a lot younger, I had a version of J-Wolf's dream trip--enter the Park and never leave. My dream had several versions. The most unrealistic was to see how long I could live off the land before the rangers caught me. Because I am a blacksmith, I figured I could even scrounge coal from the old railroad beds, salvage iron from the lumber camps, and forge whatever I needed. Slightly more probable was to talk the government into hiring me to reestablish one of the depot farms and run it as a tourist attraction for canoeists, complete with blacksmith shop, draft animals, and all the other fully functioning activities needed on a farm. But these days, being older and having tried my hand at being a blacksmith and farming with oxen, I would settle for a dream more like Raccoon's, but since I have paddled all of his route in smaller chunks a number of times, I would try to circumnavigate the Park, going as close as possible to the boundary lines. A week in a villa on the coast of Greece sounds a whole lot less strenuous.

I like Rac:-):-)n's trip. He would spend most of his time in the interior, away from the crowds. That got me thinking, what would be the longest trip I could take that would keep me at least 1000m of portages and/or the better part of a day's paddle away from any other access point (except, of course, the one I started on). The trip I've outlined here, starting and ending at the Tim River, comes close (I had a hard time avoiding Opeongo Lake). I've been over most of this at one time or another, a fair bit of it solo, but there would be a few corners that would be new. Getting from High Falls on the Bonnechere over to Robitaille might be an adventure. I figure it would be a fun 3-4 weeks . . . in my dreams.

Me too!

Hey, Raccoon, why not split the difference and do your route over 16 days? One re-supply at Kiosk would be the only intrusion back into "civilization". I like that route. Mark, you have come up with an amazing loop too. How does one pack enough food for four weeks, though? Perhaps a better option would be to rely on some friendly AAers for re-supplies a few times.

My dream trip would start the day following the last day of school in June, and ending the day before I need to report back to school in September. Repeat each year as needed.

More realistically, it would be nice to spend the whole month of August in the Park. Most realistically, my dream trip is a mere two weeks away, 'cause it's already booked and it's gettin' hard to wait!!

I miss the days when you didn't have to book every night. That's my dream trip.

My dream trip - A River Runs Through It!

July 30 2009, 12:25 AM

Very quickly, here it is without a lot of detail, a zig-zag if you will, covering as much of the park as possible and avoiding the crowds - for the most part:

I love the rivers in the park, so we start in the West end of the park and pick up the Nip from Big Bob and paddle all the way to Cedar, come down and jump on the Pet and head upstream through Catfish and Burntroot into Longer and hang a right at Shippagew creek and then up the Tim right to Ralph Bice then down to Daisy and jump on the Pet - all the way to Big Trout, portage into La Muir, to Hogan up Hogan to Phillips, down the Little Mad a bit and jump on the logging road going south that comes out at the end of the 1220 on the Crow, take the Crow across Lavieille, down the Crow and hook up again with the Pet, down the Pet all the way to McManus - running as much of the water as is possible. Get out at McManus and go to Sec Lake and hang out, recover for a couple of days and get a shuttle to south of 60 beginning at Rock, then off to WelcomeHarryRence - Louisa - west to North Grace, McGarvy and up to Big Porc to Smoke and then into recovery mode again. That would be one helluva trip with so many options you could stretch it out for 6-8 weeks. That would be a dream trip. I have paddled most of these waters over the years except the Nip and south of 60. This fall I am doing the Rock - WelcomeHarryRence - Louisa loop.

My second dream trip is happening in 3.5 hours, George and I are heading to Wabakimi for the first time, leaving at 4:00 am! See you all in a couple of weeks.
