Has anyone been to Ryan Lake recently? I'm going up there this weekend with a couple friends. Going for fishing and just relaxation. Anyone have advice on the campsites? From what I've read, the island site is the best. However, according to algonquinmap.com it is removed, is the site still usable? Any other sites that are recommended?
For fishing, seems like most people fish in the Spring. Will I still be able to catch Splake here? I assume I will have to fish deeper, by trolling or jigging. Any help on techniques, lures or any other info would be appreciated since I'm still a newbie at fishing. We would probably also hit the neighbouring lakes. Try to catch some Lakers in Shirley, any spots that are good?
Has anyone made it out to Big Red, Shrew, Mudville, or even Chewink Lake? They supposedly contain Brook trout. Is it worth the trip out there?
Any other general info around Ryan Lake would also be appreciated.
Hey Harry, I have been to Ryan about 25 times. Try to get the campsite immediately to your left as you come out of the put-in bay. There is a pool beside it I have never failed to catch splake from (often from shore). The rocky island directly across from it is also a great spot, and for swimming. My wife caught a 6lb splake on 1 side while I was swimming on the other.
Dont bother with Big Red, Mudville or Chewink. I have caught specs in Shrew, and my dad lost an 8lber at canoeside in Shrew. If your up to a short bushwack there is a small unnamed lake directly north of Ryan that might be worthwhile checking out, it is connected to Ryan from a creek. EGB's and blue countdown rapalas have always worked for me, worms on a bobber are often only thing that will work in summer.

worms on a bobber work in summer? won't the splake be down too deep for that? i thought algonquin didn't allow any live bait anyway..

Splake dont go as deep as lakers. I havent heard of worms being banned, but they should be.

Hi,
I'm just curious, which access point is Ryan Lake off of? I try to keep notes on the different lakes I find information on from this site. I've scoured my maps but can't seem to find Ryan Lake!
