400/401 traffic snarls

Hello all:
Just thought I would mention to everyone that this is construction season on the 401 (at least in the GTA, where the paving of the express lanes left us stuck for 90 min the other day, and my sons narrowly avoided missing the start of the Coldplay concert), and the night time paving of the 400 N just before King City led to our getting home around 3 am).
Then there are the usual long-weekend traffic snarls, like the one on the 400 N on Saturday. My son and I were driving home from his track practice in Newmarket, and had to venture on back roads for a long stretch because of even more construction on secondary roads (and don't some people drive like morons on them in order to pull a u-turn). The usual 80 min drive took just under 3 hours.
Check the MTO website before you leave, or consider taking secondary highways.

I'd rather chew tinfoil than drive the highways on a holiday weekend.

We avoid long weekends like the plague! Got stuck on Hwy 11 for 5 hours once, that was enough for me. Now, we'll turn a regular weekend into a long long weekend and beat the Friday crowds going up and the Sunday crowds coming back. An excellent investment is the Ontario Backroads Atlas. It can save you a lot of grief especially if you have to get off the main roads and don't know the back roads.

Traffic jams on a weekend I can see, but spending a combined total of about 2 hrs on a Thursday night is frustrating.
Going into detail about the crazy things we saw other drivers try to pull is a whole 'nother post in itself !
