Had a fantastic week in the Park last fall after some great suggestions here, so I'm hoping I might tap into your collective knowledge for this one...
I'm looking to get a few days in early Oct and spend some time based at either McKaskill or Wenda lake. We're looking for some nice fall R&R and I anticipate planning a day trip or 2 from each, but returning back in the evening. From Wenda, maybe up to Greenleaf and back and from Mckaskill to Animoosh or a little way along the Bonnechre?
As far as the lakes themselves, McKaskill sounds nicer to explore, plus a nice paddle/portage mix from access pt 17. Wenda sounds less appealing to get to (upper/lower spectacle etc) but holds Greenleaf as a good day out.
Which would you consider a better lake to be based?
I'm sure both will be great - never known Algonquin not to be, but would appreciate any input from people who might have been up that way.
Go for Wenda Lake. You don't have to take the Spectacles, instead go up Grand and portage to Wenda. Carcayou and Greenleaf are worth visiting, ecpecially cliff climbing on Greenleaf.

Thanks - I've heard that portage can be 'fun'!
Does anyone know what condition the 2 ranger cabins are in on these lakes?
Cheers,

I did that portage and found it OK. Not bad fairly clean ansd clear as portages go, a little up and down but no big thing (consider that I also did the one from Greenleaf to Grand Lake over the hill and dale under the hydro towers!!).
