Unfortunate, indeed...

Also read something about a missing canoeist in the park that was recently found, caught brief details on CP24. Wonder what came of that

very unpleasant indeed, this is sad news and must be a terrible thing to have to deal with in the park. i can only imagine the dread and panic one would feel.

Exit Strategy?

August 18 2009, 1:23 PM

A tragic story and outcome. Condolences to those who lost a loved one.

From my review of the article their was no PFD as they were swimming at night. The swimmer must have felt comfortable as they weren't wearing a PFD (I am not sure of this fact just speculation).

My question is how did they get help at 2:30 in the morning from the middle of the park?

"Ontario Provincial Police received a call around 2:30 a.m. and the man was airlifted to North Bay General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. "

Did they have SPOT or did they send someone out, did they pick up a stray cell phone signal. If anyone knows that would be of intrest in knowing what other people do faced with such a serious scenario, not just morbid fascination, but a way to learn from others.

I dont wan't to hijack this thread so may post another thread if people think it would be of value.

Cell phone signals

August 18 2009, 2:53 PM

In my experience, tripping around highway 60 at least, I can almost always pick up a signal with some clever positioning (on a hill, on a point on a lake, etc.). Usually 1 bar or less, not sure if it's sufficient for voice calls but certainly enough for text messages.

FWIW, I bring my phone as my fishing alarm clock happy.gif

I know that from the docks of Opeongo I had no cell signal. Certainly it is possible that some signal was possible on Burnt Island, but that lake is a pretty good distance from highway 60. Possibly there was a satellite phone that was used? That or a SPOT device would seem like the only likely scenario at getting help at that hour.

Unfortunate. Too many drownings this year. People must respect the water.

drowning

Hi

He was probably used to swimming in the Indian Ocean where the high salt content made him more buoyant. When he jumped into Burnt Island, he sank like a rock. It probably caught him off guard. All he had to do was to panic and take one big gulp of water and thats it. He would not be able to make a sound and he would lose all this strength in seconds.

Drowing is very easy and it's usually over-confident people who think they are strong swimmers that drown (in non alcohol related cases)

Someone could of paddled back to Arowhon Pines Lodge on Little Joe. A mentioned, you can catch a signal if your lucky or position yourelf well near Hwy 60. Sad news.
