I thought I'd start a thread for the Daisy Lake trip as some people were interested in starting to plan for that weekend.
So anyone that's planning on coming let us know.
They don't forget the warmth especially when everything else was rather wet!
P.S. Thanks also to Stainless who ensured Racoon
and the Hennesy hammock bonded days gone by.
Also Kudos to Tomek for rekindling those warm flames
that realy were warm
Was really looking forward to more face to face meet&greets (Sept / Oct ) but life seems to get in the way every now and then.

Looks like this is the better choice, so I will be preparing for this trip. Looking forward to seeing faces old and new.

Markus, can't blame ya

Markus, I echo your anger. That road is absolute murder on a car.

not so much anger Bryce, more annoyed and alarm than anything.
My car is a piece of crap rust bucket...however the barron canyon rd has killed my car twice...blew my struts on it once, and then a rad hose near the intake manifold last month...both after coming down from traverse.
So you can imagine the sharp intakes of breath when we came out of Magnetawan last weekend.
The road was much worse coming out then going in...I like to compare it to driving on the surface of Mars....so loaded with rocks and just plain rough...Anything less than a pickup or a 4x4 is not wise to drive on that road.

Rough road
September 30 2009, 3:56 PM
Oh no!
If the access road is as bad as Markus and Bryce say it is, we should probably heed their advice and change the location of the Oct. 16-18 get together.
What does everyone think? Other options? - Head Lake? Galeairy?

Hi Stainless,
all this talk of the rough road has got me thinking. Joan & I both noticed that the road seemed more chewed up in spots coming out, and while we did come out we saw a couple of guys on ATV's in the area, even a guy on a dirtbike with no helmet. What is more bothersome, is that the forecast up there is rain for the next week or so. I think you might be correct in changing the location, especially if the weather continues to degrade. I want to re-iterate though, my car is a piece of crap. so I think most AA'ers here have way better vehicles than I do, but still as Bryce suggested, it is hard on a vehicle, especially with all the rain coming.

To elaborate
September 30 2009, 7:22 PM
I think it's a rough road, personally, for any car. It's chewed up like a large-treaded vehicle has driven over it. For some long patches it's like driving on the "asleep-at-the-wheel" lines of the 401. As Markus pointed, it's got some slow-down spots where you're either going over potholes or dodging small rocks.
A truck would have no problem, but I don't think it's good for a car no matter the condition. Some may be more forgiving than I, or perhaps someone may be able to comment on just how damaging that could be for a car...
But that's just my $0.02! It's a great area of the park from what I saw

I would suggest any of the large RED dots would work for me
But I can understand the long paddle might deter a few
ANYWAYS
Have fun (wherever)... IMHO I'd suggest Galeairy ( you know where), Pen ( campsite nearest portage to Welcome) or Clydegale
( First campsite on Left after entering the lake is sheltered
yet fantastic area and view available ) or keep paddling and last on right before lake dog legs to the right )
P.S. If you opt for Red Dot option #1 ... I'll have warmed vodka waiting
Large RED dots are option #1 ( drinks not required )

I will have to say that the only worry I had for this trip would be the access road into Magnetawan...
This past May when coming out from the Craig Lake trip, my 4x4 suv took quite a beating on those logging roads, so much so, that when I was going down Hwy11, my left-front tire exploded into shreds. I was told that by the looks of it, the tire must have suffered some severe damage before it blew. Because of that, when I was going into and coming out of Magnetawan this past July on my solo trip, I was VERY VERY scared while driving it. After I finally got off the road on my way out, I was happy the canoe rental place was so closeby as I really needed to stop and rest -- my heart was going a mile a minute... and again, I drive an SUV with 4-wheel drive. They reeeeeeally need to better that access road, a LOT.
I'll still go no matter where it is, but if it is moved to another location, I'm all for that as well. I just want to get into the park once more, and hopefully meet up with some fellow AA'ers.

Road Conditions

FYI -local businesses were not too pleased with the condition of the road just outside the park boundary and the road to the put in, I beleave they were going have a meeting and inform "the powers that be"

They must be doing diddly-squat for road maintenance there.
The last time I was on those roads (about 10 years ago) going to Tim River or Rain or Magnetawan, the roads were OK for a regular car.

Not Daisy Lake
October 1 2009, 3:30 PM
Well then, let's say no to Daisy Lake unfortunately, and pick another location.
Some where off HWY 60 corridor.
The western campsite on Head Lake is perfect for our group. Lot's of day trip possibilities.
It's a bit exposed but there are tarpology options galore if windy/rain. Sunshine no problem.
But, it's a long portage, with boardwalks and some mucky sections.
Other option still would be Rock Lake to Galeairy, or maybe down to Pen. Perhaps the island in north end of lake with two campsites would work. I've never camped there before. Maybe it's too exposed to cold winds.
Maybe other sites in the south end would be better.
Or access at Canoe Lake and camp on Tom Thomson or Little Doe.
Thoughts?

I like all the places you mentioned Stainless. I haven't been into Penn or Galeairy so that would be a new experience for me. I sure hope the rain that is predicted clears out in time for a beautiful weekend.
We are leaving for our Michigan summer camp tonight to close it up for the winter. I'm expecting cool dreary weather up there.

Hummm
October 1 2009, 6:35 PM
Hey all ....
I would prefer to keep the portaging to a minimum, as the weather has taken a turn downward turn, and hence the gear an upward one. As well, I will likely be raveling on the Friday, so any trip requiring more then a few hours of travel might prove difficult (with the shorter days now.)
I like the Rock Lake to Galeairy option (not only because of the short portage) but also, it has been on my list of "go to's" for some time. Alternatively, I've also wanted to visit Sunday Lake or Sproule Lake, which offer various access options and day trip possibilities.
I'll second JeffP's sentiments. I was really looking forward to the Galeairy trek as I have wanted to go there, just always opted for more "remote" locations up til now.

Galeairy Gathering - Oct. 16-18
October 2 2009, 9:44 AM
OK then. We'll make it Galeairy Lake.
I hope that will be all right for Paddlin, and Dave and Amy.
I know it's fine with Kermit.
J-Wolf, do you want to partner up? I want to go in on Thursday.
