Nalgene Firefly lanterns - has anyone used these?

The firefly lantern is an battery powered LED cap that illuminates your nalgene as a camp light. Has anyone tried one of these and is it worth it or not? We usually just use headlamps in the evenings but wondered about efficiency and extra weight of these.

LOL

When I read the title of this thread, I pictured someone trying to catch a firefly in an empty nalgene in order to create a lamp ... a la something out of the Flintstones. happy.gif

I don't have one, but I know a few guys that do, and theirs are a little brighter than a candle lantern (they seem brightest when full). One person had an issue with water getting into it, but it may have been banged around- he had fallen on his pack earlier in the day.

I've had one for a few years now, it's only been on one trip.  I doubt it'll see the woods again.  Not worth it in my opinion.  The travel mug lid made by the same company "Guyout designs" is one of my favorite pieces of kit however.

Thanks for the info. Pete, that kind of feedback is just what I was looking for as I had my skepticism about the real value or worth of an extra device like this. It would be cool for camping with the family but I think for just a couple of us it wouldn't be worth it.

And SM, that's a fabulous site you referenced - I bookmarked it in my favorites and loved the in depth analysis of the huge range of products!

Yabba dabba doo!

Never tried one per se but I did do the same thing with a flashlight and bottle of bug spray by accident once. Worked like a charm (actually it worked well, charms don't work at all). I'd bet it's effect is mitigated by the type and colour of bottle you use but I've been impressed with my squishy bowls which are also made by Guyot Designs. They seem to be a cool company thinking up new ways to solve old problems.

But for the record I thougt of it first. wink.gif
