Hey Markus what kind of lens are you using for those? The one of the hawk looks great how did you zoom in so much ? Must be a good zoom lens.
Either way love the water one too, what was the length of the exposure that you used?
Thanks

Hi Mike,
Didn't see anyone on Shippagew or WT for the two days that we were on both lakes...awesome!
Not one canoe...nothing!
Yeah I read that Russ guy's trip-log as I was planning the same route, sorta.
The site on WT is nice, but had an over-used look about it. No firewood, went to the mainland and scored large(As always)
Yeah looking forward to the north trip...gonna bring my tripod this time.
Andrei, I used my 90-150mm lens for the bird zoom(which was cropped btw). equivalent to an 180-300mm by 35mm standards. The lens is nothing spectacular, it is ok.
Ask Barry, Tomek, or Steve Elms what they use...they've all got "Wow" equipment. Makes me envious!
For the water shot: focal length was 45mm, Exposure was Manual, f/5.6, 10/20 sec. ISO 100, with a polarizing filter. Normally I'd use a ND filter(drop it down 2 f stops), but forgot to bring it.
For the bird: focal length was 150mm, Exposure was sport setting(biased towards DOF), f/5.6, 1/800 sec. ISO 100, with just a UV filter.

The not so good photo as you said of the bird could be
mistaken for the new stealth fighter with the bow sprit of a bird
Awesome photos and you are one lucky dude to have
traversed Big Trout albeit you didn't camp there
at what I believe is the greatest lake in the park ( in case you didn't know )
and Happy belated BD
Trippin in the park is a great way to celebrate ones birthday !

Beautiful pictures as usual, Mark. It looks like you were graced with some spectacular weather along the way and the wildlife was plentiful. Consider yourself fortunate for having the access and skills to get to and capture those sights!

Nice ones Markus...

At first I thought it was a vulture, after that a falcon but nope... I dont think it either of the two.
Very nice photos... dont you love when the light is right and the colors cooperate?
Thanx for sharing.

Thanks dooods.
I agree Tomek. Actually call me crazy, but i think it might be an owl, at the same time though, i think it might have too much beak for an owl.
I don't know. I'm rather poor at being a 'birder' if ya will. This trip was real exciting because of the lack of people and the amount of wildlife activity...would love to do it again and again!
anyhoo here is the rest of the pics I took of the bird.
The first one was out of focus, but you can see if it was, it would've been real nice with the colours in the backgorund;

That is not an owl. It is either a hawk or a falcon. By the tail it sure looks like a falcon. It's hard to get as sense of scale in the photos but it could be a peregrine.

+1 on EGB, Northern Harrier, white rump is a dead give away, shallow v-shaped wing pattern, also flight pattern. flap, flap, flap, glide... flap, flap, flap, glide...

Ah, Yes
Sparrow Hawk, Pigeon Hawk and Marsh Hawk (erroniously called that) are actually falcons: Kestrel, Merlin and Harrier

Harriers are not members of the family Falconidae.

BEAVERS!
October 4 2009, 10:51 PM
Wonderful picts Markus, I especially appreciate the beaver one. They don't photograph too easily and generally take off before picture range or don't come out til low-light/nite. That rodent u shot certainly has an interesting expression, lol.

Thanks for the bird ID guys. We also happened to see a Bald Eagle too.
I was surprised to see that Beaver sitting there. I spotted the fella quite a long way off, as it looked out of place(not a stump, and the colour was all wrong), As we got closer, I couldn't believe my eyes, he was just sitting there(soaking up the sun?). What was even more astonishing was that in the previous 5 minutes we had spotted 3 more beavers and 4 otters too. This was around 11 in the morning...unusual to see so many beavers out and about at that time of day(IMHO)
Looking forward to this weekend's trip, never been to Maple Creek/Lake in the fall...
