A beautiful gem of a lake , this massive maple was one of many mature hardwoods along the walk up the Ghost lake portage . I took an early morning walk yesterday , hoping to have a glimpse of the Ghost and the remains of the fire tower . Made it approx halfway and spotted a bear above , along the portage , no pictures . After the adrenaline stopped and my heart returned to normal , I walked back and decided to check out the old road that one can walk back to the Brent road with the remains of this old gate just before the Ran Lake putin , fer years I've wondered where this trail ended , it's not on maps but has been cleared fer use of late ?
The lake itself reminded me of Luckless and Nadine , it's waters as clear as the diamonds on Mario Lemieux's three Stanley Cup rings !
Pitcher plants , absorbing insects in their nitrogen poor soil.
The remains of the foundation of the cabin just beside the only campsite on the lake , I've read on previous posts this was the cabin used by those that manned the fire tower up the trail .
The two seater , that Bo has referred to , interesting as the hole on the left being smaller with a foot rest fer the young uns .
When I first approached the shitter , I thought why would some one be so lazy as to try and axe kindling from the sides , on closer inspection and after spending a sleepless night hearing the very loud scratching sounds , this shitter is also a favoured markin spot for ole ursus americanus
I'm six feet and with my arm fully extended I was able to reach the top of the scratch marks
The campsite itself is huge and flat and previously had sandy gravel spread , put me in mind of a site on lakes along the corridor !
Paddled the lake perimeter trolled fer trout , walked the trails and spent hours sittin on this stool , just takin it in !
The loons were frequently on the move between the three nearby lakes , and could be heard close and beyond all night , the slap of their wings on the water with the extended take off.
