who numbers these sites? does anyone but AA'ers recognise them?

I hope this isn't covered in a previous post.

PCI campsite numbering ...

October 19 2013, 7:15 PM

The numbering of the campsites is simply to facilitate readers' identification on the map as to where the inventoried campsites are located. The numbering process is not based on any existing documentation and is purely arbitrary. Just for the record, I'm not interested in having specific campsites reserved by a numbered system!

thanks, Barry.
I might have some documentation on other sites. sometime I'll put something together for ya : )

incidentally, I stayed at site 11 on pen lake last week. I didn't see campsite signs on sites 8 or 9 on my way in or out of the lake.

Pen Lake Campsites 8 and 9 ...

October 20 2013, 7:31 AM

Pen Lake's campsite 8 is "tucked-in-behind" the pine knoll and beach, actually accessed by the bay behind the knoll. People using that site usually string-up something between the pines to indicate "to-the-lake" that the site is occupied.

Campsite 9 has a small narrow landing amongst the shoreline trees. The sign is usually hard to see unless you're very close to shore.

Thanks Chris for sharing. I love your hand drawn sketch. Gives a nice feel for the site. As a side note the PCI project has helped me convince a few reluctant campers to give algonquin park a try.

Another submission by Chris Taylor ...

Here's the portage between Booth Lake and Kitty Lake ...

http://www.algonquinadventures.com/PCI/lakes/Booth/PortageBoothToKitty.htm

In the case of portages which join 'campsite lakes' with 'non-campsite lakes', I'm organizing (grouping) those portages with the 'campsite lakes'. In the case of this submission, it meant changing the 'direction-of-travel' from upstream to downstream.

And, of particular interest in the case of this submission is the dramatic difference in the Kitty Lake landing conditions .. between September low water and July high water!

This photo (by Bill Warren) was added to illustrate the difference.

Stayed on Booth last weekend for the 1st time at site #8 (narrows). Nice lake with beachfront property along the eastern side.
That little 90 M portage is more of a nuisance and the put in at Kitty is pretty rocky. It can also get backed up if a lot of people arrive at the same time.

Hey "RC". Your post reminded me that I'd checked-out that campsite last year. So I've put together a campsite description for it!

That's awesome, Barry. Makes sense now that you mention it used to be an old road. The Thunderbox is now to the left down the 'road' and not up the hill as you described. The site is deceptive because when you pull up it initially looks small but you realize that you can fit a lot of tents to either side of the hill.

Clues along the way ...

October 20 2013, 6:50 PM

"RC", thanks for the thunderbox update. I've corrected the PCI campsite description.

When walking along the old roadway trail, if you look way up into the overhanging trees you can still see some of the remnant loggers' "field-telephone" ceramic insulators through which the phone lines were hung. They are held up by galvanized wire. I was able to use my pocket camera's tele setting to get this shot of one ...
