#12 : Pam 127 vs Pam 217

[linked image]

King one day, king forever !

Both watches have a brushed steel case and a black dial.
The Pam 127 SE from 2002 was produced in 1950 units, 900 in 2002 and 1450 in 2003 but all the models have the millesimation letter E. 12 OOR ( *1 ) were made later.
The Pam 217 was made in 1000 copies in 2005 as a Special Edition too. It have its OOR clone too and 11 of them were produced.

Both are Luminor (*2 ) and Marina ( *3 ) even if this term is not written on the Pam 127's dial.

First :
The Pam 127 is the first Luminor 47mm, it is also the first 1950 case. The Pam 217 is the first 47mm destro, it is the first Special Edition destro and first 1950 style in destro version too.
Second :
The Pam 217 is the second Luminor 47mm and the second 1950 Special Edition.
Third :
The Pam 217 is the third ( in the Vendôme era ) model to use the name Marina Militare.

All is inverted,

vs

Near the 3

The hands even if they are not made of real gold are pure gold ...

and long like a sword blade
[linked image]

Luminor Panerai below the 12 on the Pam 127...
[linked image]

When at this place the Pam 217 reads Marina Militare
[linked image]

The font used is slighty different.

[linked image]

The Pam 127 has pre-Vstyle font with a straight R.
The Pam 217 has a more modern-vintage font with a curved R
There is more space between the letters on the Pam 217.

[linked image]

The destro is branded above the 6
[linked image]

The Fiddy takes one small 1950 at this same place.
[linked image]

The dials are loged behind a domed cristal

Views of the cases :

In 2002 the 1950 case with its curves appears for the first time...

The engraved crown guard is a novelty too.
[linked image]

On both the crown guards are reverted, they open down to up, but the Reg.TM ( *4 ) is pilled too...
[linked image]
... on which model ? That is the question.

Brushed case and polished bezel.

Both of the watches have a see trough back which display the movement, on the screw are engraved all the informations : BB and OP number, water resistance, millesimation ...
[linked image]

The movements :

They are the same, they just don't have the same decoration. The new decoration with Côtes de Geneve for the destro, When the fiddy has the first OP XI decoration with panerai panerai panerai stamped on the plates.

Some personal comments:

At first their lightness is destabilizing, then we can only get used to their presence on the wrist.
Time passes, tastes change, new models have arrived, others are coming. But with the purity of their lines they remain timeless and will be for long. Icons !
They are also for collectors, great replicas of their ancestors and also the first pair "vintage" that it was possible to build.
They have a collection value quite similar while there almost twice more PAM 127.

Fiddy vs Militare ??

*1 : OOR :
Out Of Range, in the first case these watches are at the start one shadow which served in shows and displays ... the factory reuses these watches by adding them a caseback with a special engraving : the letter of the millesimation is replaced by OOR. There is no OOR who is a specific watch : they were all made from already existing models, neverthless some have some differences regard to the benchmark model; ex : Pam 02 and 61 OOR has the movement which was then put in the Pam 112 and the 118 in the E serie ( The new OP XI instead the OP II ), the pam 194 OOR has an improved bezel ...
In the second option we can considere that the factory uses some available parts and make a few more models.

*2 : LUMINOR :
The name has been patented in 1949. The name Luminor comes from the luminous substance based on tritium which replaced the previous radiomium.
Now, Luminor is know as a case style ... a Luminor must have a crown-guard.

*3 : MARINA :
They are panerai watches with a Luminor case, they are called marina when they have a small seconds function, without the seconds hands, the Luminor watches are called Base.

*4 : REG.T.M. :
Combined stand for Registered TradeMark
