So, how many of you travel with your PAM's?
They are so noticable and I wonder if any travels with them or do you just leave it at home and go with a 'beater'?
I'm on the fence on this one as I really don't want to get jacked when I am with my family (2 very young kids). Really can't be swearing and fighting with anyone when kids are around LOL. No Dwayne 'Rock" stuff.
Thoughts? I'm not too concerned with air travel or hotels.... usually stay in great spots. Worried more about when I go out and take in local sights.
Although i have heard that some countries, like Holland, will charge you duties even if you can show proof of purchase outside the country. you may need to check, but i wouldn't worry too much.
This is my longtime dilemma and Ill be relocating overseas next month permanently with movers. My question is, is there a safe way for me to travel with my collections. I've got three PAMS, some rollies, cartier and omega in my stash. Ill probably send the box with the container, but I also dont want to check my watches in along with my luggage in my flight.
Going to extremely seedy spots you should be fine. I travel a good amount and never think twice about bringing along a Panerai or any other well known piece.
Say for example you go on a cruise. On nights where you dress up formally, the rubber strapped Pam looks 'out of place'. Thus I am looking for something that looks fashionable and yet can take the abuse of water!
Hi. I've worn PAM, Rolex and IWC in lots of reputedly dangerous places , eg Bogota, San Paolo, Buenos Aires, and never had a problem. I'e much rather wear them and take the (minor) risk than leave them at home.
Thanks for your input. This is good to know. Maybe its all about how you carrry and present yourself. Look confident and aware of your surroundings and people will leave you alone. Look vulnerable... Well that's when you get into trouble.
The first is common sense regards the destination. Some places in the world are less safe to wear an expensive watch, a little research never failed me before.
The second is how comfortable you feel - if there is any doubt then leave it at home. The last thing you need to worry about is a watch, especially as you have 2 young children - your true grails : ))
steve, i've never had an issue traveling with my pams, always being situationally aware of

your surroundings and knowing where you're going is important. i've traveled a lot in 2011 and never had an issue. as a matter of fact i've met some awesome people who love the brand and have had some great converations about the pam i'm wearing. good luck and stay safe.
I solve that with insurance, I sleep well no matter where I am . . .
If you really get into a situation where someone REALLY wants your watch; give it to them. I'm going out on a limb to say if you (we) are spending $7-10k+ on a WATCH (BTW, you can get a timepiece at most any drug store for less than $10), I'm going to say that $10k is a meaningless move in your net worth. Would it SUCK to lose $10k? Absolutely.
There are people jacked every day for their smartphones. It's all about where you are going and when. It would be sad to be on a great trip and not be able to enjoy your watch. Likewise it would not be smart to wear it in a bad area or under circumstances that could be "sketchy". For me, I am conscious of when my watch is showing. I've taken it off an put it in my pocket a few times. Many hotels have safe storage of some kind that you could use when you are going somewhere that might not be the safest.
Theft can occur anywhere. You can avoid most of it with a little forethought.
Also, some would say don't take your watch off. It's easy to "lose" a watch that is not on your wrist. Cover it with a coat - turn it on your wrist so that it does not show - leave it at the hotel (in a safe).
Bottom line, enjoy your watches as much as you can! AND get a personal articles policy from you insurance company.

Like others have said Rolex is much more likely to gain attention. I've only had my Panerai noticed a couple of times and they seemed genuinely interested in the brand.
Good luck with your travels.

I got robbed of my Panerai at gunpoint early evening two blocks from my place in Pacific Heights in San Francisco. It can happen anywhere so why live in fear? Just get insurance
