Eleven years ago I bought a PAM 40 for $2800, now entry level Panerais are in the $5k range, and "vintage" Panerais like the 40 are going for $30k or more--I don't think inflation accounts for all of that. I do sort of miss the days when I knew all the models by number, and most of their millestimations; and while the constantly changing Panerai line-up keeps things interesting, the plethora (nod to BBQ here) of models and special editions can be overwhelming to the point that I stop trying to keep up. Nevertheless, Panerai doesn't seem to have any trouble selling watches.
I'd say Bonati is doing a great job.
