249 vs. 587

I'm trying to decide between these two beautiful Panerais. I would have thought the 587 would be a bit more expensive, but they appear to be priced similarly, all other things being equal. Though I love them both, I'd be interested in knowing which you prefer and why, as well as which will likely be more comfortable on the wrist after hours of wear.

Thanks.
John

It depends a lot on what other Pams or Other watches you

August 4 2017, 7:27 PM

Already have .

If you already had a Pam 372 ,662 ,663, 605. or other 47mm Laminar Pams . The 249 !
If you already had a couple or just one Radiomir . Then the Pam 587 .
The 587 is also a true sandwich dial where the 249 is a painted in sandwich dial very different from angles . Looking at both watches straight on you don't notice but from aside view you do !

Hope you get my angle on this .
I have a Pam 232 Radiomir brother to the 249 and wears really flat and light for dress shirts or casual .
The Plexi crystal on the 249 sits higher on the wrist than the 232 flat Sapphire crystal but the same movement and weight

Here is a picture of my 372 closest to the 587 But the 372 has a crown guard and different hands /with a 232 showing a straight on shot and you can't discern the sandwich dial

Here is an angled shot showing the sandwich dial of the 372 .

Great post Mike, thanks

One thing I found interesting in your photos is how the 232 or 249 Radiomir case, though thinner, looks a touch bigger (from the top) than the 372 or 587 case. I suspect the latter wears and feels larger, but the 47mm Radiomir makes a bold statement and has a lot of wrist presence.

Great vintage look vs. Classic DNA of Panerai
In my opinion, both are fantastic.

For me a watch is a question of personality.
So, choose the one closest to your personality, and put the second one on your wish list for Christmas happy.gif)
Good luck.

249 4 Evah. And I own a 587 too

August 4 2017, 11:15 PM

The 249 is my first PAM. I picked it because of its unique dial, and its stealth. I wears smaller than its 47mm size. It works with everything from ammo to gator, and you can wear it with a suit.
Its historic, it has a reliable movement that's relatively easy to service.

Don't get me wrong. The 587 is beautiful, and it says Marina Militare. But if I had to get rid of one over the other, it would be no contest.

Whatever you choose, you're not wrong!

Good luck,

Greg

Why does it matter what anyone but you prefers >>

August 5 2017, 4:55 AM

Your the one thats buying it and your the one thats going to wear it, so what I say or anyone else says is moot

You need to try them on and check and see which one fits you the best and sits properly on your wrist. Everyones wrist is different and what works on some make not work on others

However. One main point to consider

Rad you need to undo 4 screws, remove the arms etc. to replace the strap each time your want to change it.

Good luck

I agree DON, it's a personal decision ...

August 5 2017, 6:00 AM

... and the input of others isn't essential, but I admit to enjoying hearing various opinions. It's part of the fun of the hobby for me. In addition, sometimes it's helpful to hear from those who have particular experience with one watch or another since it can take time to appreciate strengths or weakness, for example, in comfort, reliability, and ease of changing straps, as you say.

Do you prefer a Luminor or Radiomir case?

August 5 2017, 12:59 PM

These watches are apples and oranges. Rad vs Luminor. Cali dial vs MM. Beefy lugs with screws vs wire arms with a much more difficult strap change. Thicker squared off case vs a thinner cushion case. Like Don said, who cares what others think? You need to try them on and see what you like better. I have owned them both and no longer have the 249 but still have a 232.

Different perspective ...

August 5 2017, 1:11 PM

I've owned both Radiomir cases. Comparing just the two watches I'm a bigger fan of the Radiomir case (249) as oppose to the 1940 Radiomir (587) case.

The movement on the 249,in my opinion, is much nicer than the p.3000 in 587. However, if you are looking at a NOS 249, having the watch sit around for nearly a decade might not be good for the movement. Meaning expect to incur some servicing expenses. The 587s are relatively new.

Last but not least if you look at the 1940s Radiomir case, it's pretty much a luminor 1950s case less the crown protecting device. The lack of presence of the crown protecting device makes the 1940 Radiomir case a symmetrical case, which in my eyes looks a bit unconventional. Take it with a grain of salt. At the end of the day, get the one that sings to you the most.

If you like both equally, get them both. It's a buyers market for Paneristis.

Interesting perspective regarding buyers' market

August 5 2017, 6:16 PM

I'm new to Panerai so don't have the perspective that many of you have on this forum. A pre-owned 249 seems fairly expensive to me at this point ($8-9k) especially since the watch originally sold for $5,800 in 2006. It sounds like prices have fluctuated based on the following from a writer named Matt Baily back in 2013:

"... one must keep in mind that the PAM 249 originally retailed for $5,800 USD. It sold out almost immediately, and traded hands for multiples of the original retail price. Values spiked before 2008 and have come back down to more reasonable levels, but you still will not find one for less than a 5 digit price in any condition."

but that doesn't have anything to do with prices.

It's supply and demand. When more people want and not enough to go around. prices go up.

Also in that it has no Panerai name on the dial.

If they release the 721. Prices might drop if people jump on board that model and loose interest in the 249
