| The Lams/Butterfly Bangs at Metro, 7 Jan 2006
'Short on set, long on sonic lobotomy' (G2)
The Lams at Metro are somewhat different to the early Lenie Mets/Mark Keds vehicle. Keds & Mets formed a partnership, shared vocals, guitars and songwriting duties. A cover of Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Brenda Kahn's 'What if I saw Jesus'was key; their own songs were celebrations of sexual infatuation, perhaps tempered by moral castration (the 'Jesus' bit!).
The Lams at Metro are louder, the guitars multi-layered and expansive. Young guitarist Alex brings a fresh impetus; bands such as Million Dead and even Mars Volta spring to mind. For Mark this direction brings him closer to his old favourites Fugazi; a hard direction is confirmed by the continuing presence of Braille drummer Vincent. Exhilarating, but of course there is also danger in this sonic robustness: Mark's lyricism and melodic talent may simply be overwhelmed. It's the same old artistic dilemma, voluminous rock versus pared down intimacy. But really it's not much of a dilemma. You'd pay good money to see Lenie as a talented and charismatic performer in her own right in search of the lyrical sublime, or at least great kick ass social observations.
The new Lams do play hard and loud, but in 'Looking for Green' Mark proves that his exceptional talent for concise, memorable songwriting has not departed-and 'Precious Engineering' serves equally well in this department.
Keith in the most recent previous The Lams incarnation was effectively a bridge, having just completed a tour with Flesh for Lulu and professing to yours truly an admiration for Interpol (too dark!). It's laudable that these influences do filter into Mark's music.
Butterfly Bangs, what a name! I'd anticipated a wildly effervescent, risque (obviously!) boy-girl punk cabaret: in reality an all male indie rock band performing crafted, passionate and soulful songs like a full-on Merz. Good.
addendum
'I Don't Sleep, I Drink Coffee Instead'
words and music, Brenda Kahn (cheers Christopher!)
'There's a white trash chick
at the donut shop
reading horoscope cos
her old man's hot
turns out the light
flips out a cock
His name is Bob
lives down the block
I don't sleep I drink
coffee instead trying to
burn a hole through
my aching head
Now I'm thinking about you
Coming home a junkie
face like Van Gogh
two eyes, two ears but only half a nose
Boys say beat it girl you stink
You've got a head full of lice and a
mouthful of drink
trashcan peepers give dumb bitch a wink
to me that ship don't fly it sink
Bothering nothing chatted and content
got no sleep I drunk coffee instead'.
amazing!
