Accident kills 1 on Purdue hockey team, 7 other players injured
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A member of the Purdue University Ice Hockey Club team died and seven of his teammates were injured Saturday afternoon (Dec. 1) when the van in which they were riding rolled over after sliding on ice-slickened Ind. 25, five miles north of Wingate, Ind.
The accident occurred at about 3:45 p.m. as the 20 team members, two coaches and a manager were traveling to the David S. Palmer Arena in Danville, Ill., for a scheduled 5 p.m. game against Holy Cross College of South Bend, Ind.
The injured were being treated Saturday night at Home Hospital in Lafayette, said Purdue spokesperson Jeanne Norberg. None of their injuries appeared to be life threatening, she said. Authorities have not released the name of the student who died or those who were injured pending notification of family.
Head coach Cameron Estes of Danville, Ill., said three vehicles left Purdue about 3:30 p.m. for the game at Palmer Arena, where the team also practices. Those in the vehicle in which he was riding did not see the accident but came upon it a few minutes later, finding the van had rolled and was on its side about 10 feet from the highway.

The seven players that were injured in the accident were released from the hospital. The player who died was an 18 year old freshman. Very sad, more reason to hate those damn vans that are used to transport teams.
I think that this proves that there are schools who don't provide their club teams with enough funding. 15 passenger vans have never been safe, you hear about them having accidents all the time. I think that schools need to find a way to provide their students with a safer way to travel. I know that the University of Iowa has buses, but when we asked about having access to them, we were denied because they are for tours. I dont think I have ever seen those buses driving about the campus giving tours. Hopefully these schools realize that even though we are club teams, that we take the game serious and we deserve to be safe when traveling and playing.
The University of Iowa hockey team has the Purdue Hocey team and family members in their thoughts and prayers.

Purdue University Hockey will never be far from all of our minds and hearts for the rest of the season. In a tragic instance like this we all become painfully aware of the risks we all take in traveling to and from games. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Purdue Hockey family and Cameron Estes in this difficult time.

Our kids take risks everytime they get on the ice, ice hockey is a wonderful sport where the participant accepts a risk to play a sport they love. However, our kids and coaches and support staff don't need to take unneccessary risks. We wouldn't think of letting our kids get on the ice without proper equipment but we let them get loaded into vehicles that are very dangerous.
There have been some significant improvements in the safety of these vans over the past few years but many of the vans on the road are still dangerous. I've attached a link to a group called "Van Angels" they have made it their mission to help keep our kids safe.
The site has a solutions page with some common sense thoughts on how to avoid these horrible occurrences. I hope every decision maker in our hockey family takes the time to read and act on their suggestions and let this tragic accident serve to help prevent it from happening to you or your child.
The entire Illinois State University hockey family is saddened by the loss of Andrew Jackson of the Purdue University Hockey Club. We feel for one of our 2006 recruits who eventually choose Purdue; Georgis Tzortzakis and his family. Hope you recover fully from your injuries. This forum has been created with the purpose to constructively discuss college club hockey. We encourage you to freely discuss any topic you wish, with the caveat that you keep the discourse within the bounds of good taste. While good natured trash-talking is fun, thought provoking and acceptable, any replies that turn personal, disrespectful and/or disruptive of the intent of this forum will be deleted by the moderators of this forum.
Our intent is to build up and promote college club hockey and its teams. We need to work together and support each other to make this happen. We already have enough critics of club hockey. Let's do our best to keep things amiable on this forum, as not to give them any ammunition.
Best of luck to ALL teams!
