There has been quite a few postings about some of the coaches, past and present, on this board. I think a lot of you need to step back and think about what these guys are doing. First of all, with very few exceptions, this is a volunteer position. They're putting in a lot of time and effort to help each team field a program. Just like the players in this league, no one is headed for bigger and better things. Most are there for the fun and competitive nature of the sport. How about stepping back and taking a deep breath and give the guys a break.

For some it is a volunteer position and no pay but alot of love for the game. Lindenwood coach trying to make it a career but will be selling used cars again some day. Bank on it. New SLU coach also a paid coach now unlike predecessors and will be responsible for poor performance after receiving pay for bang up job. If you accept pay for a usual volunteer position be ready to accept the criticism at times. New Billiken coach perfect example of confused young man looking for a life in hockey. He quit his day job and will face many hurdles making a living in St.Louis coaching hockey.

Most teams in the MACHA give a few bucks to the coach but I am guessing less than $1000. NONE of the coaches on a club team get paid enough to put up with some of the bitching that goes on. If the situation is bad enough the players will talk with the coach as a whole. (i.e. SLU last season).

I think that you maybe surprised as to what some of the coaches are getting paid. I would think that $1000.00 is going to be a team like an SIUE. But programs that have money to throw around, like a Lindenwood, that coach may ull down minimum $15K as an employee of the school. In a SLU situation probably gets about $5K. A McKendree seems to be a pretty well funded program and that coach works for the university. How much more goes into his paycheck to coach a club team? My guess is at MSU that coach is volunteering time as he has a son on the team, but I would bet that Coach Alexander had a fairly good payday before he left. Thought this club hockey was for fun, not profit. What qualifications does a college club coach need? Can anyone confirm numbers and qualifications?

SIUE coaches don't get paid at all. They volunteer their time to help the program. Most are former players that are finishing up school or have just graduated. JV Chance Webb and Jason Walker are both still students. Walker in Grad. School and Webb finishing his undergrad. Varsity Scott Cloin and Otis Stewart both have jobs and do this because they enjoy it. Other programs may pay but that's not why these guys coach at SIUE.

Coaches at Missouri State were not paid. It was all volunteer. For some coaches of other schools who are paid (minus employees of the school) I would think it's more like gas money than anything. I would assume most volunteer because they love the sport, enjoy coaching, and want to see the success of the program.

Once again. Club team coaches do not get much if anything at all. Just so you understand...
A club team is under the supervision of a schools student clubs or student activities. There are some teams in the MACHA are NOT club teams but are varsity sports teams under the athletic department.
These varsity teams are... Robert Morris (although Bryan over at springfield has a "real" job), McKendree and then since it comes up, Lindenwood. All others are clubs and have to work to get enough funds as it is. It would be a tough call to make each kid pay even $200 extra just so the coach can get a few thousand.

Bill is on both the Mckendree payroll (professor of graduate classes and hockey coach)and the SIUE payroll for his normal duties to SIUE. Im not exactly sure what he and the assistants get paid but i do know that they DO get paid. I appreciate everything they do for the organization but from some of the things I've seen and heard Bill is paid VERY well for what he does, he does put his time in though contrary to popular belief

I really don't think it's anyone's business and really isn't relevant to the topic. The coaches should get some respect regardless of if they're paid or not. So just fill in the blank with whatever figure makes you feel good.

We respect all of them. However, if a coach is recieving compensation then they have to be ready for a little more expectations from players, fans, and the general public. Now you fill in the blanks for us because it does matter as we march down the road speaking about particular teams and their staffs.

OK, so since there has been ample time for programs to just come out and divulge paid coaches and amounts, lets recap with some assumptions because we have been offered nothing else (figured that). Thanks to those programs that did respond your integrity is clear.
Purely Volunteer (Given small reinbursements for travel etc.)
SIUE
MSU
On the Take (Coaches trying to make a living or padding income)
LU (Probably on university payroll)
Mizzou
SLU
McKendree (Probably on university payroll)
It's a shame that universities, players and parents have been led down the garden path by some of these local coaches. This generally happens at the so called higher levels of youth hockey. Use to be call "travel" now it's AAA, Central States, and some levels that coaches have just created calling them delevopmental or prospect leagues. In a truer thought lets call it what it is, write the big check make a team. There are some coaches on the take there that should be questioned and some have found their way to ACHA teams. But I digress.
In any case, back to coaches taking money from ACHA programs that charge their players fees to play for "fun" or the "love of the game". They need to take a look at this and figure it out. If they have a successful career elsewhere and can afford the time to coach an ACHA Club Team then that's fantastic but if they do it because it's required for them to pay bills at home then perhaps they will be a candidate for this redistribution of wealth that is being promised by one of our political icons in this Presidential election. Guess players just want to keep writing checks for hockey as long as they can. Seems to me that there are student loans and other things to save for and utilizing coaches that can teach and lead by example would be the better road and fits well into this level of "college" hockey. We have always heard that players play this level for "fun" and "enjoyment" so should the coaches be doing it for the same reason? In the long run it may not win a college club championship and that could be what's being promised by the paid coaches I do not know. But since this whole post was about respect, now you understand why this ties directly the statement "Give coaches a little respect". I give that respect to the coaches that do this for the same reason that the players play otherwise they are paid and will be judged on performance, success, failures and their actions. Sound fair?

That's great. Your program is to be commended and moved to the Volunteer side. See all you had to do is come out and tell us. So we are left with LU, McKendree and SLU coaches "on the take". No problem, we just need to know what we are dealing with. For the poster that keeps saying "it's none of your business", well we will assume that your programs overpay an underqualified coaching staff or a staff of wash ups that are totally using their programs to make a living. Sad group of losers.

assume what you want all day long. still is none of your business. let me clarify what i mean though. if you are a player, coach or perspective player then you may have a right to know. then i would suggest going and asking that coach what he gets paid. once again if the team is under the athletic department, which SLU is not, then it is different. I believe those situations people do have a right to know. Not positive on that unless we know the policy on publishing salaries of other sports teams coaches.

Failure to respond to a message board about pay has nothing to do with integrity. You are just making an ASSumption. It is none of your business. None of these coaches are clearling minimum wage for the amount of hours they put in. Get over it.

I didn't realize the amount of efforts the coaches put into keeping teams going until I got to see what all goes on behind the bench first hand this year. The majority of the sponsors that we get are from our coaches going out to get them or putting their money into it. I don't know if its any different at other programs, but I know last year Larry did damn near everything (Schedule, book hotels, buses, airfare, he was on the MACHA board in some capacity [Treasurer I think] and coach). Do all of the coaches do this much or do some just coach and delegate other responsibilities to other people?
As the league grows and teams get stronger and stronger, hopefully all coaches could get paid a little something in the future, considering all they do (at least Larry in this case) and putting up with 18-28+ yr old guys for half of a year, but we aren't at that point yet.

We have a defenseman on our silver team who is 28. He served two deployments to Baghdad, went to SWIC for a year and transferred to SIUE. He's a force protecting our goalie...especially in Game 1 vs. Western.

That's awesome. I thought I would love to go back and take a full set of courses just to play again.....that was until I played goal in an adult leage game last night with several former Missouri State and Jr players. I can't keep up with you guys for 3 periods anymore. It was 5-3 going into the 3rd, but if I was only 10 years younger......

Does he happen to be the guy that skated all the way across the ice and jumped our player? Tough guy he was.
There was not going to be a penalty called on our guy originally btw, as your goalie was at the hash marks playing the puck.

Never said anything about your guy getting a penalty...whether he did it cleanly or not, he did hit him. I said he protected our netminder, which he did. Same reason Rob Davison fought Steve MacIntyre in the VAN/EDM game 2 days ago (Nucks reference for ya Dreyer ). MacIntyre took a run at veteran defenseman Mattias Ohlund, Davison took exception. It was a clean hit, but something had to be done about it.

who is this guy that keeps freaking out about coaches and getting paid? he is having one %^$# of an argument with himself. keep it up buddy, no one knows what you are talking about. why do you call it taking? it is called getting paid. why would you not accept $ if they offer and more power to the coaches who do not get paid. i give them the utmost respect.

I cannot respect any coach who does not chastise players for yelling four letter obscenities from the bench loud enough for the whole arena to hear, especially when small children are present. What is said between players on the ice is one thing, but the coach and referee chose to ignore such an outburst, by an Assistant Captain nonetheless. Good job Bill!!

ou obviously have not been around a college hockey bench or lockerroom. these are grown men in battle, sometimes things come out that shouldnt, its college hockey. every team, except for maybe wheaton, has been guilty of this. apologies to the kid or kids that heard, but worse things are going to happen in the league. sometimes i feel like people come on here to pick fights with mck. it is always something and now its foul language. listen to any college hockey game and there will be plenty of cussing that goes on.

Not true. Teams with class play and keep themselves under control. At many levels. Just because a player gets to college does not give them a sudden right to be direspectful. It's due to coaches that are "enable" them to do this or feel this way. It starts at the top.

hahahahah...what team do you play for? probably wheaton or none. siue is a very respected team/organization and right now on there website is a recording of their bench during the game, and gee wiz guess what goes on on their bench. they say things that are innapropriate to young kids and loud enough to be heard outside of the bench. is it right? im not sure. does every team do it? yes. get over it.

We arent playing connect four, we're playing hockey, its a game of emotion. When your playing a game and trying to direct players to the action going around them, you want to get the message across in the least amount of time possible, and as clear as possible on a loud rink. By the time you say, "#19 is about 5 feet away from you skating hard about to hit you", your defenseman has been hit, turned the puck over, and your down 1-0. If you say "He's on your A**!", your player gets the message, and knows he needs to do something.
That's what makes hockey a great spectator sport, you get raw emotion and athleticism from everywhere. Some people are quiet, some play with emotion, that's just the nature of the beast. I dont know that its a class issue.

So let me use your example. If you want to use less words based on short time to react, how about "He's On You". You see there really is no need for the other word and your argument is weak. We have all (I hope, or you shouldn't be in this conversation) been around locker rooms and fields of competition. Teams with a calm, confident demeanor are successful more often then the team that plays under panic and dissaray. Coach and feel the way you want, but I will always take the road of being under control, confident and committted to winning and losing with respect and diginity. This is the best thing you can do for several reasons. It gives you a solid foundation to build all things on. If you win, you did so with effort of the athletic competition you faced and try to repeat through true effort not a burst of anger. If you lose it provides the understanding that I either did not do my part or my team did not perform up to level of the night. Will a cross word be said in any competitive situation, sure. Is it really productive. no. And that no is for so many reasons that you all seem to know yet want to defend. Just thought I'd denfend that other side.

This forum has been created with the purpose to constructively discuss college club hockey. We encourage you to freely discuss any topic you wish, with the caveat that you keep the discourse within the bounds of good taste. While good natured trash-talking is fun, thought provoking and acceptable, any replies that turn personal, disrespectful and/or disruptive of the intent of this forum will be deleted by the moderators of this forum.
Our intent is to build up and promote college club hockey and its teams. We need to work together and support each other to make this happen. We already have enough critics of club hockey. Let's do our best to keep things amiable on this forum, as not to give them any ammunition.
Best of luck to ALL teams!
