I seriously doubt that anyone in need of a life preserver would ask for a down jacket instead. The evidence suggests that someone other than Natalie put the jacket on her not realizing it would act as a life preserver. (Or perhaps, did know it would act as a life preserver and wanted to torture her alive in the water...this we will never know unless Wagner chooses to tell us) The person who discovered Natalie's body 31 years ago tells us that she was "hanging from the down jacket" the jacket was floating on the water...this is not in dispute, it's fact. The jacket did not pull her down, it kept her afloat.
