LAPD?

Maybe someone from California can explain this to me. Better yet, someone from the LA area. Some people have posted here comments criticizing the LAPD for its investigation. Why would the LAPD have jurisdiction over a death investigation when the death occurred near Catalina Island? Isn’t the LAPD the police department for the city of Los Angeles? Is Catalina--an island with towns of its own--really part of the city of Los Angeles? I can understand how it could be part of LA County and therefore under the auspices of the LA County coroner’s office, but I don’t get the LAPD connection.

It was the LA County Sheriff's Office who investigated, not the LAPD.

if there had been foul play and a trial the LA prosecutor would have presided, I believe. Does anyone know?

Catalina has it's own municipality and sheriff but for deaths, the LA sheriiff gets involved. I am from CA. near LA
