Natalie Wood's death certificate has been changed from "Accident" to "Undetermined" ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... the L.A. County Coroner filed documents making the change late last month.

Members of Wood's family tell TMZ ... detectives from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department -- which has reopened the death investigation -- paid them a visit earlier today informing them of the change. They tell us ... detectives told them the change was made in part because some of the bruises on Wood's body were inconsistent with death by drowning.

Family members add ... they were told at this point authorities can't prove definitively Wood's death was accidental or the result of foul play. Detectives did tell family members Wood's death was definitely from drowning, but the way she ended up in the water is unclear.

Wood died November 29, 1981 after an alcohol-fueled party on a boat off Catalina with Robert Wagner and Christopher Walken on board.

Law enforcement sources tell us their investigation is still active.

Robert already knew it wasn't an accident. Hell, he's the one who put her in the ocean. (everyone knows that)

Statute of Limitations

Doesn't seem likely that there will ever be any prosecution of anyone in this case. The Statute of Limitations for 2nd degree murder and manslaughter ran out before 1990, and the facts don't seem to be there for a murder 1 prosecution.

In California, there is no statute on murder no matter what degree.

At the very least, the change from äccidental"to cause of death as ündetermined"throws a whole lot of water on RJ's image as the "grieving widower". Since his image has always meant so much, this alone is a huge blow to his pride and ego. Anyone who knows boats and boaters never believed his lies form Day 1. He knew exactly what Natalie was up to and where she was at all times on that boat. The Spendour really wasn't the size of an aircraft carrier after all.... Lies never hold up and seeing him on TV telling Diane Sawyer in 2008 that she slipped off that swimstep and maybe hit her head is just about the silliest of possiblilities. Hope they can do more with the positoning of those bruises, proving the violent fight that Dennis described with her new earring knocked off her face and landing in the corner of the stateroom. Remember that mysterious abrasion on her check/even at the time that was unexplainable. Statutes be damned, let RJ admit the truth for once.....

Good, then they can get him on First Degree Murder. All they have to prove is malice and forethought.

Not going to happen. As much as i would like him to fry, there is no way to prove this was 1st degree premeditated murder with anything short of a confession or a witness, or some form of unequivocal documentation.

There is more than just the bruises that don't add up. I hope science can throw a few unlikely scenarios out the window and refine some of the details of what more than probably happened that night.

One thing is for certain. He was there. He knew what Natalie was wearing & there is no way she left the door open for him to see her after a violent alcohol & jealousy fueled argument (and no the first of that weekend ie. the night before when she stayed at the hotel with Davern and almost left.)
