On the history page here I see the following item:
648-749
&#8226; Japanese monk Gyoki plants the first tea bushes in 49 Buddhist temple gardens.
&#8226; Tea in Japan is rare and expensive, enjoyed mostly by high priests and the aristocracy.

Who can confirm this. I know Gyoki never went to China. Can somebody find a source for me. Japanese or English. Thanks.

Eisai was the first monk

According to Art of Tea the first monk to bring Zen Buddism and tea saplings of <a href="http://www.artoftea.com/catalog/eisaiÂ’s-choice-sencha-p-55.html">Japanese Green Tea</a> was named Eisai. He planted the first seeds and samplings in Uji.
