Redoing Kitchen Lighting

Hi

I am redoing the lighting in my kitchen and I have a question I hope you can

help me with. My kitchen is 9'x 13' (117 sq ft) with a drop ceiling 7'5" high.

It is open on both ends, has a long counter and sink on one side, two short

counters broken up by a stove and refridgerator on the other and no windows.

Existing lighting is provided by two 2-tube 40W fixtures recessed into a 4'W X

6'L X 7"D well with the light exiting through four prismatic panes. The

interior of the well is bare drywall.

I want to replace the 40W tubes with with CFL's in recessed cans. California

law now requires fluorescent for general lighting in the kitchen! Also, since

I don't want to destroy the ceiling I plan on using remodel cans.

The Lumen output from the present four 40W tubes is 10,600 (4 tubes X 2650

Lumens/tube).

I am planing on using nine remodel cans, eight of them in a four by two

pattern (with four cans installed inside the existing well) and the ninth over

the sink, slightly off the the center of the room. Halo (and others) has a 13W

CFL in a remodel can (H274R) that uses a two tube CFL with 825 Lumen output.

Doing the math on this gives 7425 Lumen's total output. 18W CFL's would

provide about 10,000 Lumen's but I can't find ANYBODY who sells 18W CFL's in

REMODEL cans. Do you know of a source of 18W CFL's in remodel cans?

I am concerned that nine 13W CFL's even with Alzac reflectors might not

provide as much general lighting as the present four 40W tubes do. 10,600

Lumens vs. 7425 is a big difference and the kitchen is none to bright as it

is. I would welcome your thoughts on my situation and perhaps ideas/options

you could suggest. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Regards

Jim

Hi Jim,

Have you tried looking at Halo H800. It uses two 13 watt bulbs so you would have 26 watts or the H870 which uses a single twin 28 watt bulb. Let me know if you can't find what I am referring to.
