When using under cabinet halogen puck lights, what spacing should be used? (Assume we will be using 20w/12v puck lights.) The goal is to provide good task lighting with the ability, through the use of a dimmer, to create good mood lighting.

Puck Spacing

I first must say I don't like using pucks for UC lighting unless I have no other options. With some cabinets where a skin is covering the bottom I am forced to use them. The puck that I found has the best spread of light is the WAC HR-86 which also is a Xenon bulb. It really does make a difference. Some brands have a very narrow spread and cause a very spotty appearence on the counter. With the WAC's they can be about 18" apart to get fairly even and good illumination.

Then, what would you suggest?

Thank you. I will try to find some one who carries the WAC HR-86 in my area, Mesa, Arizona.

If not puck lights, what would you suggest? The lighting is for existing kitchen cabinets that are 17.5" above the counters. The upper cabinets are 1 foot deep over a 2 foot wide counter top. We have three runs to light: 15" and 55" on either side of the cooktop (which has a lighted hood) and 61" over the built-in desk. The desk currently has a single fluorescent tube (about a foot long, not sure of the wattage) and the 55" run has a regular house wiring run to it, just underneath the upper cabinet.

The upper cabinets have solid oak face frames that extend about 1 and 3/8" below 3/4" particle board bottoms.

Existing Cabinets

Hi,

If the cabinets are existing, you may be limited. Are you doing all new wiring for these? The two methods I like best are either xenon fixtures like a Kichler UC light, which comes in different lengths or a low voltage linear system like Juno Trac 12 or Halo Linea. The less costly method is the fixtures. Either gives good even bright light. Hope that helps
