To understand the significance of The Exorcist you have to consider its place in history. The '70s were a time of relative innocence in movies. it was one of the first movies of hits kind to come out so it had a lot in its favor at the time.

Halloween was scary, H2 wasn't.

The Village was effective as an example of what you don't see is more scary than what you do see. Any movie that overexposes you to the monster(villian) is not scary.
