I have to disagree, Saw was shlock the whole way, I think torture films just suck, and Saw falls into that category, The only real suspense comes at the end, movies where we just get to watch the next person die are pointless.
A gun wired to a door, whoopie, a bear trap for head gear just stupid. Now The Host was an interesting twist on the whole giant monster eats people thing and I bought a copy that day after I first saw it. I have Dead Alive and Slither also in my collection. Both original in some of the ideas, both using a little humor to offset the horror which can really make a movie work.
Oh well, obviously due to the success of the Saw movies my opinion means little, but I have seen two Saw movies and was dissapointed in both.
