Colonel John on second review looks like the most likely winner based on the logic that if he was able to post a 93 bsf as a November 2yo then as a March 3yo with normal improvement he should be able to win.
Victory Pete is a story we've read a hundred times. A struggling young horse is given blinkers for the first time and they transform him into a runner. Since donning a hood his training has improved dramatically. It's not just a hunch because he's a Pete horse.
El Gato Malo is training brilliantly at Hollywood Park and he already posesses a wonderful mind as evidenced in his last two at GGF and SA. I've always thought this is a sixteenth too far for him to win & hope that as he tires he gets passed by two at least.

Based on the T-graph figs his last was about 5 lenghts better than anyone else's best, even after adjusting for the 2-4 lb handicap. Not sure he'll love the extra 1/16th, but unless someone jumps out of their skin he won't have to.
I'm going to do something REALLY crazy in this, the opening tee-off. If you're going to take a swing for the fences in any of the contest holes, it's probably a good idea to do it with the first swing. Heck, the worst that can happen is a big fat SIX!
I do like the good Colonel in here, but I'm taking the gradually improving maiden, Success Fee, instead. I like the progression for this maturing colt, and I love the pedigree for the distance........note that he has by far the highest distance Tomlinson in the field. His finish postition has improved with every start, and he gets a 5-pound break in the weights. Michael got a chance to get to know him in his last, and I honestly think he has a puncher's chance in here.
Success Fee to win the Sham!
By the way, there's an intersting pair of closely related colts in this race. Success Fee is out of Immerse, making him a half-brother to Stephen Got Even, who happens to be the sire of the #4 horse, Trevor's Clever. Also, Success Fee's dad, Mineshaft, is a son of A/P Indy, who also sired......guess who? Stephen Got Even!
#6 Colonel John wins over #2 Success Fee. Not a golfer, but in keeping with the terminology of the previous posts, I guess that means I am shooting for eagle.
The Bad Cat may beat me and get the 1 1/8 here with a short field but can't see him being around much longer on the Derby Trail.
Wish our colt was in here with the scratch of his stable mate instead of pointing for the Lanes End!!
Have a great day and good luck to all our players.
Special THANKS to our sponsors and... parisbob, official scorekeeper.
Badactor is heading out to get a few shots of the day...
we should have pictures from Santa Anita by late evening.
In real life I always take it easy on the first hole. Just try to hit a 3 wood in the fairway instead of trying to boom a driver. So in that light, I'll take.
