Beyer will probably give this colt a 99 or something like that. The Santa Anita dirt remains ridiculously fast.
All I know is that I was blown away by Premier Pegasus today, and two races later, I was still shaking my head. This was a tough field today...probably the best Derby prep this year...and Premier Pegasus just destroyed that field!
Looked very good, is bred to route, relaxed good and finished very strong. Biggest threat to Uncle Mo? Speaking of Uncle Mo, not crazy about 2 preps for the derby, but this horse has never been challenged, today he wasn't asked for anything, could have won by 20, could have ran so much faster than he did. He might just be able to gallop the rest of these horses into the ground.
Despite the surface change back to dirt Santa Anita is just as screwed up maybe more than when they had the pro-ride.
Tossing everything that preps over that surface just like when it was pro-ride.Good run by Premier Pegasus though taking back off the front running maniacs.None of those three idiots on the front end wanted to give up the lead.
Uncle Mo got an 89 Beyer-which was probably easy to score given the Tackleberry race a couple later.Don't think it really matters in the long run.Get a better gauge of where he is when he goes 9f's two turns against hopefully better competition. This was a nice public workout-slow early fast late.
What I don't like is Repole calling the shots.Sounds like Pletcher wants to run him in the Fla Derby and keep Stay Thirsty in the Wood but is defering to his owner.
I always liked Premier Pegasus because I thought he would actually be better as they go longer. My only concern is the trainer/jockey combo. Today I was impressed that unlike his earlier sprints and even his firs trace this year that he could lay off the early pace and finish.
After winning the San Felipe Stakes,
PREMIER PEGASUS was taken back to the receiving barn.
"You really like my horse." the groom noticed.
Out of breath, I asked "Are you going to the Kentucky Derby?"
He smiled and excitedly responded, "I think so."
Premier Pegasus moved up another 2.5 lengths after The Factor romped in the Rebel yesterday. If Soldat, The Factor and Uncle Mo are all in the gate come The Big One, I'm all over Premier Pegasus notwithstanding his non-Grade I connections.
If Premier Pegasus wins this weekend,
Myung Kwon Cho will be the first and only horseman to have
owned, bred, and trained the winner of the Santa Anita Derby.
