Hello Fourm, What a wonderful place to find some great information. I was wondering if any of you seasoned carvers could assist me in getting my Bear Carving skills better? I have been practice carving for a few months now and I really enjoy this art/ hobby, but I just cannot seem to get a decent looking bear to come out. I know practice make perfect! I have looked at the step by step area of the site and their doesnt seem to be any smaller bears to take me through the process!!
If anyone should have any step by step guides pictures from different angels and some tips and tricks for doing any kind of bears, caricature bears, etc. I would love to work with the guides to better my skills! You can email me at smet_2@charter.net
Thanks and I look forward to hearing from any and all of you!!!
I have a step by step for you, but you need to log in so I can email it to you and offer my limited knowledge. lol
If I can be of assistance call me 573-286-4358 and we will talk. If you are interested in a school, George Kenny has been teaching chainsaw carving in a school atmosphere for many years now and you can find him by searching the internet "bear in a box"
The Yellow forum is owned by United Chainsaw Carvers Guild. You said the yellow forum has this school up and running. Is UCCG putting this on then Carrie, be the first thing they ever did for carvers as a whole instead of a few.
Hi Lee....
Everyone has their learning curves and methods. I urge you to not underestimate your own ability to stand back,
study your work, and make changes....whether those changes can be made to the existing carving or if you have to start over again. Critiquing you own work takes practice too. You don't have to strive for 100% realism either. Generally, "cute" bears outsell realistic bears....and usually take less effort and time. I don't know if you're selling anything yet or not, but your customers, friends, etc....will tell you what they like. For now you will likely emulate the bear being done in a book or video, but in the long run we all develop our own style....which is largely what makes "art" so interesting. Good luck, Gary
Sorry for the mis-understanding. I should have made it clearer that a school run by Steve Backus was being advertised on the yellow forum - not that the yellow forum were running a school. Hope this helps.
Carrie
ps Not sure why I bothered anyway since I'm in England.
For doing small bears I found Chet Yackley's DVD the most helpfull. The big stuff is great but not everyone can find and or transport and handle large logs. Also when you make a mistake they fit in the fireplace easier..LOL
He shows how to do 3 different poses of bears in very small logs. He explains each cut and takes you from nailing the log down to work on it to how to finish your bear.
well I tried that link and it doesnt work, just go to the top of this page and click on sales menu then, books-dvds-vhs sales, and then click on chainsaw carving dvds & vhs, it will get you there.
