Bruce Lee was a progressive martial artist on a number of fronts and the precedents he set were primary catalysts for the evolution of the current status of martial arts.
I strongly agree with Master Lee's opinions on being openminded and progressive in one's approach to learning a style, as ,invariably, there will be areas of any art that could benefit with supplementation from knowldedge of another system. This "collage style" of choosing techniques most suitable and effective for a respective practitioner is a top knotch approach to learning to defend yourself.
On another note, I wonder how this would effect one in the other aspects of Martial Arts. In the mental and spiritual aspects specifically. Master Lee was taken at a young age, and in his youth could not have had an oppurtunity to explore the higher forms of enlightenment reportedly come from decades of study with in a single art(I being younger now than Master Lee at his death can not offer any person testimonies to this...only ponder it.) Based on what perspective I imagine I have in this, I would assume that a certain aspect of this is derived from an extreme focus and concentration on a finite set of skills, from learning what it takes to truly master something, or to aspire to master something, learn that such mastery is unattainable, and continue on this course not to master the skills, but to master yourself. Can this type of reward be found by practicing across disciplines and searching to supplement the weaknesses a person believes they have found in a system?
