72 Hours according to the ME

In one of the BD books I have read, it was stated that the killer tortured her for what was determined to be a 72 hour torture session...I find it incomprehensible that anyone could sustain the sort of injuries she did (Pre-Mortem, of course) and not die from the shock alone.
