Any one have suggestions for either making your period really late (besides getting preggers) or having it go away all together?? Just for a month???
I have a wedding in July (in Mexico even) and of course I'm slated for AF that week. Lucky me. I'll be at a beach resort holed up in the bedroom b/c of this.
Anyways- i did ramp down my vitex from 1600 to 800 the last 2 weeks and I was 2 days late. But I lost my libido (completely gone) once I did that, plus I'm bleeding like a stuck pig (sorry to offend) and while that is usually normal, I thought I had under some control. So I had to ramp up again or hubby is going to leave me!
Any other herbs out there I should consider- even if they tout to lessen the flow- I would love that.
I've been trying a vitamin regimen, but so far I haven't really noticed a difference.
10,000 IU vitamin A (beta carotene A) which I ramp up to 20,000 IU the week before AF
b-complex 50
zinc
vitamin c

Why don't you just use super-absorbent tampons and change every few hours?
It's really not a problem for me when I'm on my period and am out at the beach in bathing suit.
If it's about sex, there is a cup called instead cup. You can google it for more info. They sell them at walmart, walgreens... and the like.
I swear it's the best invention ever for women who menstrate and would like to enjoy blood-less sex with their partners.
...The only thing I can really think of that will almost certainly work for you is going on birth control pills. Theoretically you could skip periods indefinately by skipping the sugar pill week. (when the 'week of joy' is supposed to arrive)
I've postponed the week a few times...
Something which MIGHT postpone your week is PM...many of the girls who take PM throughout their cycle (rather than only for the first 15 days) had delayed periods. I think this has to do with the phytoestrogens in PM; estrogen levels are supposed to drop in the second half of the cycle to make way for progesterone which eventually triggers our periods.
I'm not sure hoe 'definate' this option would be though.
Hope this helps.
Maybe someone else can shed a little more light on the topic.
Ginseng causes cessation of period for some women. It has been traditionally used as a contraceptive, when synthetic BCPs weren't arround yet. I was on ginseng for stress and my period was three weeks late and there was absolutely no reason why it would be. Then I googled ginseng, read that info, stopped taking it and got my period the next day. Obviously it doesn't work like that for everyone, but it did for some. If you have the time before the vacation, you could try it for a months to see if it does the same for you.
I forgot to mention that BCP is completely out of the question. I will not go on it, even for a little while.
I don't wear tampons- haven't for years and I would NEVER do that w/ a swimsuit on and would have a pad on for backup if I did. I have to be near a bathroom at least 1-2 days of my period every month. I would bleed thru a superplus in about less than an hour.
Thanks moon on the ginseng. I am going to try that out and see. I still have 3 good months to get this figured out. Who knows, if I get my cycle screwed up enough, I'll at least be off by a week and then I don't even have to worry about it!
Anyone had endometrial ablation done? I'm considering having it done sometime in the future.

Tranexamic acid tablets
This reduces bleeding by almost half (40-50%) in most cases. You need to take a tablet 3-4 times a day, for 3-4 days during each period. It works by reducing the breakdown of blood clots in the uterus. In effect it 'strengthens' the blood clots in the uterus lining which leads to less bleeding. It does not ease period pain. Side-effects are usually minor, but may include an upset stomach. The heaviness of the bleeding is eased, but the number of days of bleeding is not reduced.
Anti-inflammatory medicines
These are popular as they also ease period pain. Most are available only on prescription but you can buy ibuprofen from pharmacies. These medicines reduce the blood loss by about a third (20-50%) in most cases. You need to take the tablets for a few days each period. They work by reducing the high level of prostaglandin in the uterus lining which seems to contribute to heavy periods. The heaviness of the bleeding and pain are eased, but the number of days the period lasts is not reduced. Side-effects may include an upset stomach. If you have a history of a duodenal or stomach ulcer, or asthma, you should only take these medicines on a doctor's advice.
Other treatments stop the bleeding, but do so by affecting your hormone levels (eg adding progesterone).
Danazol: This drug reduces bleeding by shrinking the lining of your womb. The brand name is Danol
# Mefenamic acid (eg Ponstan) - this is a painkiller that also reduces bleeding. It's particularly beneficial if period pains are also a problem. It has fewer side-effects than tranexamic acid.
HERBAL ALTERNITIVES
Yarrow, nettles and especially shepherd's purse lessen menstrual bleeding by directing blood away from the pelvis. Although mainstream medical science never adopted the use ofshepherd's purse, scientists learned in the late 1930s that this herb effectively decreases heavy periods.
These herbs are good for a quick fix while you are bleeding heavily, but for long-term results treat the source of the problem by adjusting out-of-balance hormones withvitex
Menstrual Bleeding Tincture
1 teaspoon each tinctures of shepherd's purse leaf and yarrow flower
½ teaspoon each tinctures of red raspberry leaf and vitex berry
Combine ingredients. Take half a dropperful every 15 to 30 minutes. This formula is most effective when made with fresh shepherd's purse. When dried, shepherd's purse loses some of its strength.
Sage Massage Oil
2 ounces vegetable oil
12 drops sage essential oil
Combine ingredients. Massage into lower belly a few times a day.

If you experience cramping along with heavy bleeding, use the same herbs suggested for alleviating menstrual cramps—wild yam root, false unicorn root, cramp bark and American spikenard—to reduce the severity of both of the problems.

Sory to go on but here are some things to delay your periods

Angelica
A strong, stately herb often used to correct menstrual irregularity and delayed menstruation, angelica promotes blood flow to the pelvis and causes uterine contractions. Therefore, it is not recommended for use during pregnancy, though it is sometimes employed by midwives during childbirth when labour is long or delayed. Angelica is the herb of choice for many midwives to help expel the placenta following childbirth.

Is there an herb that will help me delay my period for about 2 days just once? I don't ask this for frivolous reasons, trust me. Thank you.--Alice
Try strong sage tea (Salvia officinalis). 1 to 1 1/2 oz dried herb/per qt of water. Drink 4oz cups 4-6 times through the day 2 -3 days BEFORE and the days you wish to supress menstruation. Be prepared for dry mucus membranes : mouth, eyes, etc. and it helps to eat mucilagineous herbs/foods for a few days after discontinuing the sage tea. I've used it to supress menstruation during times of ceremony. Some women mix it with western sage or red alder bark also.
You can try magnesium, vitamin E, vitamin B-1 or a herbal remedy called toki-shakuyaku-san.

Hope this lot helps u out keep us posted, and i do hope you manage to find away to ease/stop your period troubles.
Yes, for as long as I can remember, heavy flows. Usually super irregular, too, but it always got back on track after having a baby. That lasts for about a year before I start going weird again. Now, having been on all these herbs and what not- I've been quite regular again- but always w/ heavy bleeds. :(
I am uninsured for another 4 months (hubby changed jobs- 6 months waiting period) and so as soon as we have insurance again- I'm going to be going in for them to make sure there's nothing weird going on. I would really like to see about that endometrial ablation. I hear it can actually make your period go away or close to it anyways. Wouldn't that be heavenly!
Anyways, I'm going to start w/ the ginseng- bought that today. Will go from there and try other things you have listed there. If nothing else, I would just like to throw my cycle off course enuf that I'm not even worrying about it when we're on our vacation.
Hi,
I have heavy periods too. My friend recommended the Diva cup, and I tried the store brand of disposables before I paid for the "real thing" and found that they did not work for me at all. I have born 5 children, and have a tipped uterus...so those things just leaked all over. My friend told me they were made differently than the cups...the cups suction kind of up right on the cervix and catch the flow. So... I bought a Diva cup and I have to say...I am pleased. It was kind of messy trying to figure out how to work it with my body, and you do have to deal with the blood and your parts in a more personal manner...but if you have heavy flow you are probably used to the messyness. Well, once I figured it out, it is pretty darn cool. I put it in, and can leave it in about 6 hours at my heaviest time, with no leakage, except maybe a couple of spots on underwear when I take it out to empty it.
You can't have intercourse with it in, (like the store ones) because it has a stem.
Also I have heard that the Mooncup (sp???) is better because it has a better design that helps in easier insertion/removal.
Aside from that, I have found that high doses of the NBE herbs, and or high amounts of progesterone cream...both cause delays in my period....
Or perhaps go the other route...and make your AF come early....there are herbs that do that too.
Actually, I have a moon cup. I had a Diva for about 8 months before it had an accident. Won't go into the gory details. So, had to replace it, decided to try the moon cup this time. it is smaller and holds less, but I think it works better. 6 hrs? HA! I had to change it after 1/2 hour the other day- while I was out and about. I wasn't joking about needing a bathroom nearby. I also ALWAYS wear a pad for backup.
Anywho- I'm going to try to delay it, if not, I'll try the other route- make it early, even though I read that anything less than 28 days was unhealthy or something. Forgot exactly what the deal was on that.
Well I am assuming you are going to do this for just one cycle, so bringing it early will be ok just once.
I do understand about changing the cup. If I would have tried to use one bfore all the work on balancing hormones, and my allergies to them, I would have been the same. I used to change a super sized tampon every hour, using a nighttime pad as backup which was always soaked too. The loss of so much blood caused me to be really tired.
Can you give the gory details of the failure of your Diva? I want to be aware if that is going to happen to me.... :-(
