Ok so I've been a sufferer for about 4 years, and i don't know how i got it because I didn't get my first kiss till i was 20 (i know...), so i must have gotten it from someone i probably shared a drink with (which makes it even worse, now was it Trina, Anthony or Rob?? jk),
so i'm having an outbreak right now and it's just ridicolous because i had one last week which was slowly going away and now i'm having another one and it seems to be a real severe one too and i've been trying out www.neveranoubreak.com which is a method using dmso, liquid oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. i'm really giving it a go this time because i seem to always have these nasty oubreaks for no reason!!
what i found to help me in the past was:
1 glass of redwine + dabbing the area with redwine (only works b4 blisters start forming)
2. icing the area (only works b4 blisters start forming, or it'll prevent more from forming)
3. earwax, as gross as this sounds, earwax actually works wonders (google it)
4. hydrogen peroxide on the area (soak a cotton balll with it and leave it on for 20 min)
supplements:
1. garlic
2. red marine algae (sp?) too lazy to look for bottle to check
3. lysine tabs (up to 3000mg during outbreak)
avoid the following to avoid frequent outbreaks::
soda
basically any snacks
anything containing the ingredient aspartme
chocolate
artificial sweeteners
peanuts
the only problem is i always notice the outbreak too late so now im sitting with a cotton swab on my lips as im writing this lol.
so ladies, what are some of the things that you've found to be helpful?
I started getting cold sores before I ever kissed someone too. It was around the age of 8 so I definitely must have caught this from a relative or something. I would get quite a few as a child but for years I didn't get any in my teens until 2 winters ago (didn't even know this board existed then). That winter I had one which started to heal then I got another one which started to heal and then I got a third one!!! So you can imagine how completely devastated and clueless I am on how to get rid of them! I know not to pick at them so they don't spread (but still it did!), I even had some cold sore cream from the doctor and it didn't help. Anyone in my family who ever has one just uses abreva or the cream from a doctor... I don't know of anything special to help with it.
I feel for you though! Hope you get over those awful things soon.

double_ace,
Olive leaf extract works really well for me- it's an excellent anti-viral. When I have a cold sore (or feel one coming on), I use 1/2 dropper full of the liquid extract in a small amount of water, 3x a day. It really shortens the duration of an outbreak (instead of a week or longer, just a few days). It has avery stron, bitter taste so you might want to try it in some cool herbal tea or juice (not orange juice-also avoid citrus when you have an outbreak!)
Also, melissa (lemon balm) cream is supposed to be effective (though it can be hard to find) and aloe vera also kills the herpes virus.
My mum gets cold sores (for some reason myself and dad don't catch them), she has found Zovirax (acyclovir) to be most effective.
The most important thing is not to get it in your eyes - this will give you a really painful recurring viral eye infection which will then keep bothering you and could lead to corneal scarring.
Since i've had it for so long and i've probably had it longer without knowing it as a child, i'm not even sure if i ever touched my eyes with herpes on my fingers so there may be a possibility that i have it in my eyes, but all these years that i've had codl sores i never had it in my eyes so i hope I don't.
Abreva works very well. It is a topical treatment.
I also used to use lysine which worked very well for me. After the last cold sore I had I took 1 lysine a day for about 6 months and have not had one for a couple of years now.
if you go to mountainroseherbs.com
it says that Kuzdo root helps to prevent the reccurance of cold sores. it also says that lemon balm helps to relieve some of the symptoms that come with cold sores, like well, soreness, and stuff. but they say to MAKE SURE that it is LEMON balm and NOT citronella,

well good news for me and possibly everyone else on this board. I had a potential severe outbreak 3 days ago.. started with tons of bumps on my lower lip and on the edge, and on the top.. coulda been the worse outbreak ever because i've never seen that many bumps at the same time.. they were itchy blisters. Anyhow, before they got any bigger i started taking 3 garlic tablets and 3 lysine pills everyday, together with 3 drops of liquidized oxygen mixed with water + dmso appied on the back of my neck and on the affected areas 3 times daily.. it's been 3 days and none of the blisters got bigger, as a matter of fact u can't see them and they're slowly going away. I know i still ahve herpes shedding because the areas are still itchy but at least you can't see anything so i know it's going away..
so the key is to catch it early, taek garlic and lysine, put hydrogen peroxide on your lips and put a thin layer of dmso on your neck. This two step method is crucial because the dmso needs to carry the hydrogen peroxide through ur skin to reach the cell where the herpes is active to kill it., and put dmso on the back of ur neck. Take B.O.L (Liquidized oxygen) 3 drops with 8oz of water. Do ALL of this 3 times daily. Note: Do not take more than 3000mg of lysine in total daily.
I got this information from the book i bought from www.neveranoutbreak.com, so here it is for free for u guys, u can buy the dmso and hydrogen peroxide everywhere but I suggest u get the dmso that's 70% concentrated if it's higher u might get a skin irritation. Google DMSO 70% rose scented.
You may not have herpes. You may just be acidic. Try something like baking soda or toothpaste directly applied. If it works quickly, like in a few days, then you are just acidic and need to address it with diet.
I get cold sores about every year or so in the exact same spot. Every year is not bad, but, when I get it, it takes up the entire width of my lower lip! ahhhh and my lower lip is pretty big too! So embarassing especially cuz I work in the restaurant business. Hydrogen peroxide and ice do absolutely nothing no matter how early on I catch it, even if I catch it right when it begins to tingle and no bumps have appeared yet. I had heard of earwax but couldn't bring myself to try it and was not aware of red wine. My aunt gets them pretty bad too, so I'm pretty sure I may have gotten them from her. I'm gonna try taking L-lysine everyday to see how long I can go without one. it has been almost about a year now *knock on wood*
I definately have herpes... been diagnosed n everything. U were right about the acidic part though.. I'm probably having outbreaks beacuse i've been pulling late nights, i havent' been eating well so obvoiusly my immune system has gone down a lot,
Well ij ust woke up and discovered even more redness, itchiness and bumps so this outbreak is definately a severe one.. i'm hoping they will go away soon too
Sounds like you might already know this, since you are aware of taking the L-Lysine supplements to stop the Herpes. Herpes feeds on L-Arginine...please look up foods that contain Lysine, and foods high in Arginine, and obviously be aware of the ones that are high in arginine, and when you do eat them, take some lysine capsules to counteract the arginine.
I knew i had to watch my diet but i've honestly been so lazy looking into that.. i pretty much eat whatever i want to. BUt at least for now, now that i have an outbreak, i'll stop eating arginine high food and take lots of Lysine suppelements..
then when the otubreak is over i'll go back to my regular "whatever" diet, and make an effort to cut down on nuts that has the highest content of arginine and take Lysine daily to conteract the arginine/
Animal sources: dairy products (e.g. cottage cheese, ricotta, milk, yogurt, whey protein drinks), beef, pork (e.g. bacon, ham), poultry (e.g. chicken and turkey light meat), wild game (e.g. pheasant, quail), seafood (e.g. halibut, lobster, salmon, shrimp, snails, tuna in water)
Vegetarian sources: wheat germ and flour, buckwheat, granola, oatmeal, nuts (coconut, pecans, cashews, walnuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, hazel nuts, pine nuts, peanuts), seeds (pumpkin, sesame, sunflower), chick peas, cooked soybeans, chocolate
Other: some energy drinks
But like always we don't know how accurate it is. But I also found this on a different website:
As a cholesterol fighter, a high ratio of arginine-to-lysine is recommended. [1] In the urea cycle, citrulline is a precursor of arginine, so it may be that foods rich in citrulline (onions, scallions, garlic) lower cholesterol because the citrulline is converted to arginine in the body.
Which is weird because you said taking garlic helped??
I also found this website that is talking specifically with cold sores what you should avoid: http://www.articleblast.com/Health_and_Excercise/General/Top_Foods_To_Avoid_With_Cold_Sores/
The following link mentioned why beans and rice are bad, and:
Popcorn has a high argine to lysine ratio, but those prone to herpes can still enjoy it. After popping, sprinkle with Nutritional Yeast (from the health store). This adds a cheesy flavor to the popcorn. The arginine is neutralized because one tablespoon of nutritional yeast contains 190 mg. more lysine than arginine.
Here there is a list of HIGH ARGININE foods and HIGH LYSINE:
So the new ones that formed yesterday are almost gone today, and i followed the instructions on how to control herpes and possibly kill the virus, which by the way will take me at least half a year to completely kill it by using dmso and hydrogen peroxide daily to increase the oxygen in the cells so the herpes can no longer live,. I normally have outbreaks twice a year, and it seems to have invreased this lately so i'll let u guys know how it goes iwth my "killing herpes" program along with my nbe and booty program lol...
