The Assassination of Richard Nixon was announced over five years ago. Sean Penn was pegged from the start to star in the film yet they still needed help getting the film made. Alexander Payne, one of writer/director Niels Mueller's close friends (they met at UCLA film school) for no reward helped shepherd the project for five years. Leo DiCaprio read the script at a time when they were having trouble finding financing and offered his support. But ultimately Alfonso Cuaron and Jorge Vergara took the tremendous risk with their own money - profits from Y Tu Mama Tambien - to make the film.
