***As far as episode summary. ABS ( the makers of the soap's you mentioned) use to provide episode summary information fortheir soaps like From the heart (which was shown from 1997 to 1999 in the philippines )..... Since the year 2000 or 20001 they have stopped doing providing such info for their soaps.
In case you are interested to know. In the Philippines , from Monday to Fridays 8pm to 10pm ( primetime ) the 2 top TV channels ABS and GMA
both show filipino Soap opera. Thats 4 straight filipino soap operas. Each soap is 30 minutes only . HOWEVER of the 30 minutes about 15 minutes of that is commercials. So in reality we only get to see 15 minutes of a particular soap everday , 5 times a week . TOO MUCH COMMERCIALS !!!. Did you know that from start to end Mula sa Puso (from the heart ) took 2 years to finish airing here in the philippines. Same thing with Pangako sa Iyo (the promice ) So you guys in Malaysia get to watch 3 episode a day or 15 episodes a week. While we in the the Philippines only get to watch 1 episode a day or 5 episode a week coz of too much commercial.
Also unlike soaps from other asian countries where they finish taping the entire soap before showing it. In the Philippines , soaps are taped while they are showing. For example the episodes of a particular soap that were taped 1 to 2 weeks ago will be shown this week. As to how long a soap will last depends on the ratings. If it rates well, the network will try to extend the soap as much as it can This is why soaps like PSY took 2 years to finish and consistently above 40 % in ratings.
For the past 7 or 8 years,ALL the top 4 ratings shows has been local soaps made by ABS. Ratings goes up as high as 50 %. The only time this was broken was last year when Meteor garden 1 , 2 , Meteor rain was shown here. F4 shows were not even on prime time ( they were shown 5:30 to 6pm ) but they had the top 4 spots in the ratings for 8 months
***In the Philippines its ABS-CBN
In the Philippines , cable or what you guys call pay/sattelite channel subscribers are veyr few. Only about 5 to 10 % of the people in country have cable tv . So 90 % dont get to watch shows like C.S.I or Amazing race . How about in Malaysia are there many people who have pay/sattelite TV ??
DID YOU KNOW that Ethnicity wise of the 84 miillion population in the philippines , 91.5 % are Christian MALAY, 4 % Muslim MALAY , 1.5% Chinese .
***Well, the Philippines was colonized by Spain for over 300 years. It was the Spanish people that brought Christianiity to the Philippines. Before the Spanish came the Philippines was a MUSLIM country. IF not for Spain the the 84 million population of the Philippines would be composed of 95.5% Muslim Malay.
Yes there are no VCD/DVD avaiilable for filipino soaps just like Latin soaps but lately with the highly successful SWNW( timeless) their are viewers who have taped and transfer them to DVD and selling it on the net and making a good profit too. It's in its original language (filipino) no subtitiles . Of coarse this is illegal. But piracy is high in our country anyways about 50 % piracy.OOPS my mistakae I almost forgot about Studio 23 , a free channel owned by ABS so the public does get to see A.Race and CSI !
The most successful soaps of all time in Philippines is Rosalinda and Marimar by Thalia. in the early 1990's. The ratings was Phenomenal about 70 to 80 % ratings . That means that of all the household in the entire philippines that has TV , 70 % or so was watching it
***As far as the 70% ratings of Thalia's soap .That was its peak ratings. Hard to believe but true. It was pandemonium when Thalia came to visit the Philippines to withness Thalia mania . She had 2 concerts here where she sang majority in Spanish language which majority of the Filipinos dont understand . Before Marimar , the Philippines there were no foreign soaps in Philppines exept one on early morning of sunday (taiwan soap) but never rated well Ratings were only 1 to 2% at most. , After Marimar , every TV station started importing mexican/latin soaps . So for the last 8 to 10years , other than prime time soaps (which are all local soaps) all other soaps shown here are mexican/latin soaps.
Then Amazing twins (taiwan series) was shown in 2002 to 2003 ,it was a bit of a success , nothing spectacular in ratings only about 5 to6 %. Then in May 2003 METEOR GARDEN and F4 mania took over. In just its 7th episode it was already # 1 show in the country with 41 % ratings shown at 5:30pm(non primetime ) . If moved to primetime , expert say it would be rating close to 60 % if not even higher , but it was not moved to primetime because ABS want to devote primetime to Local soaps. . Even at 5 :30pm schedule , ABS was charging advertisers with prime time rate for commercial. Thus ABS earned 1 Million in ads from MG each day.Same thing with MG2, Metroer Rain, Meteor Fever . So ABS earned a WHOLE LOT OF MONEY from F4 . For about 5 months, the top 3 spots in ratings in the entire Philippines was by F4 , and 5 of the top 10 shows were theirs , and to think NONE of their shows were on primetime . . In fact MG ratings would even be higher IF only there were no VCD of MG & other f4 shows available.. The Philippines has 2 million plus chinese and majority are rich. Many chinese just bought the VCD since they understand mandarin , instead of watching it on TV (which is dubbed in tagalog ) because ABS put too much commercials
( these figures are ONLY the 5 to 6 month average ratings. At it's peak the rating was even higher ! )
1. Meteor Garden 42.6 % (mon - fri 5 :30pm ) 42.6 is about 6.5 to million viewers avg for 5 to 6 months ! )
2 Meteor Fever 39.4 ABS
3 Meteor Rain 38.4 % ABS
5 Meteor Garden 2 37 %
8 Meteor Garden 1 replay 36 %
4th ,6,7 & 9th place in ratings were all ABS Local soaps( PRIMETIME 7;30 to 9:30pm) avg 33 %
Likewise by placing F4 shows before its news program ABS was able to increase its news program nightly ratings by about about 10 to 15%
Because of MG phenomenal success , ABS and bitter rival GMA started getting asian soaps (taiwan, korean ) . So now I think only 2 mexican soaps left , the rest Asian already coz of F4 success.
***There has never been any Filipino soap that had a Sequel. Once a successful soap has finiished, what happens is the stars of the successful soap is given new soap. For example because of the succcess of PSY, the 2 main stars were given a new soap SWNW ( Sanay' wala nang wakas. The 2 main stars of Kay Tagal because of its successs, were immediately given a new soap IMBY (It might be you --still showing in Philippines )
***One thing with Filipino soap is that at times the soap ends with some questions left unanswered. Whether intentional or not I dont know. Sanay's Wala Nang Wakas (SWNW) for example ended with a few questions left unanswered but the way the story ends ( it had 2 endings ) leaves one more than satisfied .
***Well I cant comment on this coz I did not watch this. BUT this is a gma Soap . GMA primetime soaps ratings only 16 to 22 % average compared to ABS soaps ratings 34 to 43 % average . That has been the case for the past 8 to 9 years or longer. Its not that Filipino viewers are overly loyal to ABS primetime soaps but because ABS soaps are really nicer ( story, production value....) GMA has had soaps before that rated in the low 30 % on the first 1 or maybe 2 weeks of showing but drops sharply in ratings after that coz they have a history of starting series well but quickly gets boring, "overly stretched plots......
HOWEVER GMA is currently havings its first taste of a successful primetime soaps with its FANTASY seiries MULAWIN. ITS A FIRST for GMA to have a primetime soap to average over 30 % for a whole month and counting . Its the first time that ABS has faced such a challenge from GMA. Last ratings I know of ABS (MARINA) ratings is 36% vs GMA (MULAWIN) 35 % .
Because of Mulawin's scuccess. GMA preparing to make another fantasy series DARNA (local superhero ). ABS has its own version KRSTALA . I think they will go head to
