You know, theres a really really smple solution.

Try these programs

Firewalls:

Zone alarm: this is an extremely strict firewall. It warns you and asks you about every single open port and connection to the internet. many people complain about that, but thats what a firewall does it lets you know about absolutely everything. You can get the free version and keep it forever you never have to upgrade but its a good decision.

Windows firewall: if you have windows, then you should have gotten service pack 2 through the automatic updates. A very basic firewall that warns you about general connections to the internet and new start-up programs. A good tool to have but not a must use.

Norton internet secuirty: This is a great program comes with firewall, parental control, ad blocker and pop-up stopper for all web browsers and fully cuztomizable. Blocks web pages with adult material, good for parents. If you bought a computer from dell this is already installed on your computer, if its not and you bought from dell then its on the resource disk titled antivirus. Available for purchase www.symantec.com

Antivirus programs:

Norton Antivirus: This is the best antivirus out there today by my opinion, Norton antivirus 2005 the newest version comes with everything you would need to keep your computer safe. Auto protect ad-stopper parental control. Norton has provided top of the line virus protection to millions of people for years. Virus definitions all the time very user friendly full and complete scan. The strong suit for it is major viruses, although it does detect many different styles of adware/spyware its not the best program for it. Available for free 15 day trial at symantecs website or at www.download.com After 15 days you must purchase at a price of 50$ but dont worry its worth it. www.downloads.com or www.nortonantivirus.com or www.symantec.com

Spyware Blaster: this is handy tool that stops spyware in its place from trying to download onto your system. The great thing about this program is it doesnt run in the backround it lets you know whats going on. Its totally free and has constant updates. www.downloads.com

ad-aware se personal: This is a very good adware/spyware scanner. ive usedf ad-aware inb the past and its a great program to keep you safe. It scans deep into your registry and cleans it all out. A great addition to the adware/spyware killing arsenal. Its totally free, but you can choose if you want to upgrade to the pro version for a lil more options.

Spybot search and destroy: This is a good program, its been rumored to be a little bit buggy but i think it works great. Scans cookies, deep registry, local hard disks and everything. Totally free and comes with free updates. www.downloads.com

Webroot Spy Sweeper: I think this program is the best of all, it scans all your deep registry hard drives etc. Has internet shields home page change warnings. Scans cookies before theyre put on your browser. Great i love this one the most. the downside is it only has a 15-30 day trial before you must buy for i belive $19.99. I bought it and use it frequently. www.downloads.com

Registry:

Registry mechanic: This is an awesome program, it sets itself up detects what kind of system your running. Very user friendly, everything set at default is what most users should use. Hit scan and let it find all your registry problems. The thing is its kind of a trap because it wont repair all your problems unless you buy the full version with is i belive 10 or 15 dollars. www.downloads.com or www.pctools.com

Disk Keepers:

Diskeeper v9.0: This program is an automatic defragger, great for gamers and just average users alike. Its way more faster and use friendly then that annoying built it ms defrager. You can analyze your hard drive and diskeeper will tell you how many fragmented files
are on your computer and how many directories contain fragmented files. It also has a smart schedule or custom schedule feature that lets you set a schedule then forget about it. I have mine set to defragg continually throghout the day. guaranteed to speed up your system. Its a free 15 day trial before you must buy it, i reccoment it persoanlly its great. www.downloads.com

I am in Cleveland Hts. Ohio. What kind of Trojan do you have? What kind of error messages do you get?

I am an MCSE and a CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker). I know something about Trojans.

There is certainly better registry cleaners than Registry Mechanic

March 14 2006, 11:18 PM

I see that you recommend Registry Mechanic. I think it is way over hyped, over rated and much too expensive for what it does. And just cleaning the registry is not enough. Take a look at WinCleaner. The link is http://www.wincleaner.com They have a fully functional 30 day trial. It is not limited in what it will clean for you. This program is one of the best that I have found for the non techie user. It does what should be required by any good maintenace utility.

spyware, Norton anti-virus

November 9 2005, 11:21 AM

I stupidly signed up for this Norton anti-virus spyware, and it disabled my AOL completely. In order to get up and running again, I had to remove it entirely, which was not easy. Now I cannot get in touch with anyone at Norton to make sure I do not get charged with this service that I cannot use.
Got any advice on this?

Norton

My suggestion is to forget about getting anything back from Norton they don't even honor their rebate programs so you have no chance of getting a refund.
I bought a Norton Program last year with a $50 rebate and having spent $25 in resending the information three time I gave up.
I wish you luck in your endeavor.
