Make it Go Away!

October 7 2005, 9:58 AM

Hopefully I'm not playing Captain Obvious, but you can disable to system tray icon in the preferences. If that doesn't work, you can edit your registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and hopefully that'll make it go away.

Also - Pringles!

If you install Quicktime, you also get iTunes. Screw that.

How about he use whichever damn protocol s/he likes? I would rather have burning red hot pins covered in cyanide shoved into my eyeballs than use Micro$oft's crap - their network or their software.

If I were the op, I would uninstall that gateway for viruses immediately and install something like Gaim in its place.

Umm...

October 7 2005, 4:02 PM

Do you mean Windows Messenger, that comes with Windows XP? If so, go into Start->Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and then search for Windows Messenger and uninstall it. It's as simple as that. If you mean MSN Messenger, the same thing should work.

I went into my Quicktime Preferences, and I see nothing about the tray icon.

Its in the 'Browser Plug-ins' section in the Quicktime Prefs. Butt-dude didn't bother to tell specifics...

As someone else said above, Gaim is a nice messenger - the new free version of Trillian is also a good choice to run. Both of these have the added advantage of allowing you to connect to friend type folk on AIM, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, or whatever you want. Quite nice that.

Hey tOdd...
Just do what I do and disable it from starting up altogther.

I think you go to the Start Menu> Run> type in msconfig> then if you look under the Start up Programs tab you can disable stuff there (including see if theres any spyware being started up)

You can search online for a list of what each executionable program is and whether you may need it or not. Unfortunately I don't know where that page is listed.

P.S. I hate Quicktime mostly because when I try to upgrade the goddamn thing, it won't lemme just do it without an iTunes download to go with it.
Apple needs to fuck off already! I use Winamp for playlists thank you very much, and I ain't got no damn iPod!. PRobably break the damn thing by leaving it in my back pocket anyway!

I guess I'm done ranting..

Quicktime Alterative

October 20 2005, 6:08 AM

There is a Quicktime and Real Alternative for anyone who doesn't like the bloat, the player and not being able to install CODECs like every other format.

Or you lucky Linux people could always download Xine (the non-SuSE version mind).

Or you can avoid the expense

December 29 2005, 2:47 AM

As proven by many a pirate, OSX (cough, cough, BSD) runs on Intels, AMDs, VIAs and PowerPCs. Apple charge a bomb for their new Intel machines (why Steve why?!?)

However now IBM are waiving the Cell chip infront of their faces instead of the viiv, Apple may be pursued to introduce some very powerful machines (without TCPA which is required for next gen DRM). If/when they do - I'll humour your comment.

P.S. I do not condone piracy, proprietry software or TCPA!

Media Player Wars

March 31 2006, 4:26 PM

Is anybody else sick of the constant battle to be the primary media player on your system yet? Windows, Quicktime, Real, Apple's Itune thing, Dell's stupid media center, I've got em all and I still need somthing new (and free) for DivX. Here's a thought, how about when I play a movie you just freaking play it! I don't need to be challenged about the primary player, I don't want to update, I don't want to upgrade, I don't want a news letter, and I don't want an ad in my face. Whatever happened to shareware and the freedom of the internet? It's all pay this and deal with that if you don't. Freedom vs fee-dom.
