We are a group of friends who have come together because we share the common bond of caring for someone who has Trisomy 21. We are here to share therapy tips, medical issues, laughs, accomplishments and yes, even frustrations. We embrace what Trisomy 21 has brought into our lives. We feel that it has taught us to appreciate the true meaning of life. We count our children as blessings! We will fiercely protect them and fight for their lives to be valued just as all other peoples' are. We share our pictures, our stories and our hearts here not only to provide friendship and support for each other, but also in the hopes that others will open their minds and their hearts to our unique children and, in turn, make a better world for everyone.

My name is Stephanie and I have a beautiful 2 month old son named Aiden. Aiden is my angel from God.
I found out the Down diagnosis while I was still pregnant through an amnio. The amnio was done based on my ob's intuition. She has a daughter who is also blessed with Down syndrome. She has guided me and become a mentor for me since that day.

I will never forget the day that Teressa called and told me the results. She asked if I knew what Trisomy 21 was. And I said yes. She said it was Down syndrome. I said "Yeah, and?" Well, the results came back positive and Aiden has it. OK.

Aiden's father isn't in the picture. It was too much for him to handle. It's his loss, not Aiden's.

Aiden was born on August 30th, 6 weeks early. He is the most beautiful baby (granted I'm biased). He has very soft features of the Down characteristics that we have all come to love. His smile melts me everytime. He does have the complete AV Canal defect and is in the beginning stages of heart failure. He is currently on Lasix to help with the fluid. We have went into the PICU once.

There is a local Down syndrome association here that we are members of. But I looked online and just stumbled across here tonight.

Glad to see you

Hi Stephanie,

I am not a single mom, but I just wanted to take a moment and say hello and hope you and your little guy are okay. My son Ben with DS is now 2 and a half. It is very hard the first few months, and if you ever need any "online support" feel free to contact me.

Take care,

Susan

Welcome Stephanie and Aiden!

December 9 2006, 10:42 PM

Wow I read your post and it could have been mine! I am Lisa mom to Lily who just turned 2 in October! I found this board when I was 20 weeks pregnant and found out that Lily would be born with T21. Lily's sperm donor also has never been involved in her life - we broke up 2 weeks before I found out I was pregnant and he is a total loser! Needless to say - like you - it is his loss definitely not ours! Lily also had an AV Canal and went into heart failure at about 3 1/2 months old. She had been on lasix since her birth and then they added aldactone. She had her surgery in April of 05 and is still on Captopril and Lasix for mitral valve leakage. It is too early to tell if she will require another surgery or not, but she is doing really well! We go for her cardiology check up next week.

I am glad you found us here!!!

How long did it take for her to recover from her surgery? And aside from the meds, can you tell a difference in her?

Sorry to take so long to respond!

I always forget to check this side! Lily was out of the hospital less than a week! I was truly amazed! She had surgery on Monday and we were home on Friday - I was like WOW! She had been so sick prior to surgery that I immediately noticed a tremendous difference! When she was put in her own room and starting to feel a little better - she was started to laugh - a big whole hearted laugh - I had never heard her laugh like that! Also, her developments from there on were just booming! Her color turned to her normal color - a color I don't know that I ever saw.... If you look at my photobucket - I have alot of presurgery pics. I don't actually have any after surgery while we were still in the hospital pics as I did not have a digital camera then and I just took pics with a regular camera. But, I do have pics of her on there after we got home.

Anything else I can answer - please feel free!
