I saw another today at Cadnam show. He was a typical playaway baby. Nice lady called Pat owns him. I did ask her his name, but I've already forgotten it! I'm useless with names these days, he is a Furzley pony though. She has entered the 3yo gelding class at the breed show.

I did take some pics. So Mandy, when the results come out for Cadnam show, class 3, 1,2 or 3yo gelding you can add his name and pic to your album.

A really nice Playaway baby, but how can I put this politely & without causing offence to others? She really needs to watch his weight.Sorry if I have offended anyone but its a pet hate of mine,I dont like seeing youngsters with a lot of weight it does their joints no good.Maybe I have got it wrong & its the photo that makes his belly large.

Another lovely boy. Thanks Claire.

I'd hoped to go up on Sunday but had a stonking migraine on Saturday night and I felt sick and my eyes were really light sensitive on Sunday so I had to stay indoors with all the curtains closed on Sunday. Shame I missed him.

That white stripe makes me think that Thunder is going to look like him Jane!

Lovely!

Hi Faye, maybe this lady knows her pony is a bit fat &is doing something about it.The first step is realizing like you have that your pony is getting porky & acting on it.I see horses & ponies at shows all the time that are very overweight & their owners don't seem to see it.they mistake weight for condition & muscle.I have a friend who does this all the time & she makes me so mad,she has lost one pony to laminitis & another that has had it several times, all to get a red rosett.
Ranted on again have'nt I,SORRY,will now keep quiet before I upset anyone.

amanda- i dontg like to see horses overweight either but sometimes it is hard with natives, i have 2 yearlings one is quite tall and gangly the other is shorter and much more of a good doer, they both have the same amount of youngstock balancer and have ok but not lush grazing, i cant really sepatate them but its difficult because they have different needs, if i restricted the grazing the other would loose a lot of weight, im sure others might be in the same position.

the belly on him might also be a hay/grass belly as the shoulders and bum look ok to me

Ozzie is also overweight at the moment and it's tricky knowing what to do for the best. I can't put a grazing muzzle on him because he's head-shy and is likely to panic and trash himself if he got it caught on something - even if I could get it on and he would keep it on in the first place.

I've tried keeping him in but where the others were all out he became impossible to handle because of stored up energy and the stress of being away from his friends.

There isn't much grass in his field and he's fed next to nothing but he's still got quite a tummy on him.

I don't have time to ride him more than I do at the moment and of course he can't be worked too hard because he's still quite young and green.

The joys of owning a NF good-doer!

The joys indeed! Peanuts went into the spring slightly 'lean' on purpose.. (one owner actually had words with me as she disagreed with me, rugged hers to the hilt and overfed..) as did Thunder as I knew they'd bulk up a bit.. peanuts is a wide boy at the sniff of good grass.. then our farmer put us in 40 acres.. i have no say unless I move farms and if I move it means leaving the forest that Erin rides in. Also her riding school.. so hard work is what we do with him..
Being in Wales there are a lot of Welshies at Erin's riding school and the riding instructor had a chat with me about showing peanuts and warned me that he'd be marked down for his weight! honestly he wasn't fat or lean at the time.. just right in my eyes.. he certainly wouldn't get marked down now though.

Mandy I hadn't realised Ozzy was head shy! poor love something must've happened in the past surely? Thunder is good on anything over him now, lunge whips, weigh tapes, even a bag of tins i found the other day! lol i'm a mean mum what can I say. I guess you've tried working through it all with him but having seen and handled a really headshy pony before I know it's not always an easy thing to get out of their memory.

Am thinking that pony looks like thunder in the face too, but thunder looks leggier I think.. if there is such a word! lol could again just be the photo! and the ponies girth.

Hugs, Jane and the boys.

Hi Jane

When I first bought Ozzie he got quite upset about anyone touching his ears and around the top of his head. I once spent about 45 minutes trying to bridle him!

He's got much better because I've gently persisted and he will let me touch and gently groom his ears with my fingers now but he doesn't really enjoy ear rubs like most ponies and he can be very jumpy around the top of his head still. He doesn't like me putting his ears through the bridle - the left is easier but when I go around to the right side I have to loosen the bridle off as much as possible so that I can pop his ear through without actually touching it! (I've tried lots of different ways of bridling but it doesn't make any difference when it comes to that right ear.)

The vet has had a look but can't find anything wrong except some little warts. My RI said it is probably an element of learnt behaviour by now.

To be honest, it's not that much of a problem as I'm used to Ozzie's sensitivity and it's just one of those little quirky things which makes him unique and very special!!!

hmm now you are making sense about his right ear.. Thunder is like that when I bridle him, lowers his head fine for it to go over his left, and bitting is easy, but I have to go around the right to get it over his right ear.. I put it down to his being young and something we've got to work on.. guess i'd better get working on it soon!
How strange that they are both the same.. same ear too!

Hugs, Jane and the boys.
