I personally dont like to see quite so much weight on youngsters- but thats just my opinion- each to their own, we all have different views over dieal weight.

Then again i also lurch at the sight of horses behind barbed wire fencing which is another thing so many people disagree on!

Judy I agree he's coming on nicely and still growing upwards.

Thanks for your opinions girls - the joys of forums everyone is different.

I don't have the option of any other form of fencing. We are on grass livery. If I took them 15 or so miles away I can find post and rail but the riding isn't there, nowhere to walk out in hand etc.
They are safer hacking / walking in hand around the tracks and forestry near the country park and have access to the beach which comes in handy when long reigning and lunging (as softer on their feet).

They are in 40 acres so the room for 'flight' is well and truly there if they need it.

Thunder is 2 now.

Hugs, Jane and the boys.

Jane he is looking great! How is he doing?
Buster has really caught on 2 the dually,(hardly use it now) well w do use it but its hardly pulled on ect... he is brilliant out on the roads, which im so pleased about! we are introducing more scary things (hand on the stick) feather duster, windmills, parasol's anything big & colourful. Where i keep him we have 2 go on busy busy roads & we see alot of these things in the village so its very good for him! however he is very stubborn & its taking abit longer than i thought. But we will get there.
Good luck.

I personally do not like to see growing youngsters carrying much weight, if he were mine i would want him leaner than that.

Check out this website
http://www.equinestudies.org/knowledge_base/ranger.html

You will see that up until the age of two you are SUPPOSED to be able to see ribs.

Re: Thunder - updated pics

July 25 2008, 2:14 PM

Thanks Charls
Wonderful that you're no longer needing the dually. And working on scary things!

Thunder is leading well and fully bitted now, though i back off of this when their teeth start changing. I'm not leading off his bit yet though just a head collar over it. He's not easily spoked in traffic, 2 coaches recently spooked him but he'll cope fine with caravans, cars, push bikes and tractors. sadly we don't get many motorbikes. He showed some fear over a carrier bag recently so I took it out of the bush tied up the contents and he let me put it all over him bless him. he's coming on so well. Only sensitive spot is his right ear - doesn't like his bridle going over it. Funny though as Ozzie is the same on that too!

Would love to see pics of your baby now! you can always email me if you like.

As said earlier Vie, that's the wonderful thing about forums.. other peoples opinions. Life would be very dull if we all agreed though don't you think?

Hugs, Jane and the boys.

is it possible he has an ear fungus? one of mine has it. for some reason it is more common in chestnuts. i have to undo his bridle to get it on. it does not affect him in any other way.

They ear twitch them when they come in on the drifts Jane, that's possibly why he's funny about his ear. From what I've seen (only been to one drift), they do it really quickly and efficiently and the ponies don't seem to resent it. But if the foal struggles then they might not get hold of the ear properly..... Just a thought.

Thanks Judy thats interesting as Danty doesn't mind in the least his ears or nose being touched unless he is stressed about something then he really doesn't like you touching either.

I'm now trying to think what he gets stressed about as he is so layed back.

oh yes worming paste and hight stick of all things. What a donkey!!

Thanks girls, no sign of anything going on in his ears, but will watch in case. Handy to know that twitching might be accountable though, could explain things with Ozzie too - Mandy has to undo his bridle on the right too.

Look forward to the pics.. airbrush them and i'm sure he'll be slimmer! lol I could use airbrushing I must admit! lol that and my legs being longer.. oh and some laughter lines removing... infact just the whole Extreme Makeover team should do the trick!

Thanks Vie. He's got a cold winter ahead of him yet.. not that he minds!

Thats one way to look at it, when winter comes he will probably lose a touch of weight so at least if he has a bit extra now he wont be a hat rack by end of winter.

Re: Thunder - updated pics

He came into spring 'lean' in that you could see his ribs, i did that deliberately - fed over winter, but eased it back a bit. weight is something i'm very concious of. Another owner in my field was rugging and feeding her natives full feeds before spring.. now THEY are fat..

Edited late to say Judy.. only just noticed the pic you posted!! OUCH!! not much wonder they get tetchy about their ears!!

Re: Thunder - updated pics

Hi Jane

Just seen your new pictures of Thunder. My goodness he's changed and looks quite gorgeous too. Isn't he growing up into a handsome boy. It's funny how they stay the same for quite a while and suddenly change and have growth spurts right before your eyes.... similar to human boys too! (My son has shot up like a weed since Christmas.)

Thunder might well end up having quite a deep girth - Ozzie has a deep girth and I noticed that Playaway does to so it might well be conformation. My saddler told me it was a good thing - more room for good strong lungs which is what he will need when we start doing our long distance riding. When Ozzie was three he looked quite fine but he's chunked up a lot since then and now has a much more typical Forester build, good strong stocky legs with lots of bone too.

It's interesting to hear what Judy said about the ear twitching - I didn't know that. Judy often comes up with very interesting things under the general heading of "NF Pony Stuff"!!!

Perhaps if the youngsters were already stressed about being taken away from their mummies, then had some scary human hanging onto the ears, they certainly might link both events to such a traumatic time in their young lives. Food for thought???

Thanks for sharing the piccys Jane. It's lovely to see how your boys are growing up.

Thanks for the mail Mandy, I'll reply tomorrow if you don't mind as i'm off to the land of nod in a minute! lol

I agree about the deep girth he does look to be 'changing' Deep girth takes up leg well too - Domino was like that only 14hh but my friend / hacking partner is 5'11 and didn't look odd on him at all! she felt odd as she rides 16.2's but she definately looked fine and was herself very surprised.
Am hoping his legs carry on chunking up.. i'm sure they will.

Also know the feeling about children too! Honestly Erin is like a weed.. and Adele is bound to take another stretch as I bought her uniform befor school broke up!

Definately food for thought on the twitching. Judy gave me (along with a lot of others) a lot of advice in Thunders 'baby' days I'm very grateful to a lot of people on here.

Gosh i'm rabbiting now! lol
Night night x

It's very quick and they only do it if they need to worm them or put a reflective collar on or brand them. So it's mostly the older ponies and not so much the foals

We only get dial-up in our new home (hence I only get on line occasionally), and all I got of thunder's picture was the tip of his ear. Any chance of putting on a smaller version so I can have a look?
Good to hear his education is going well.

Ooops, I was too impatient again. Pics eventually came through. He's looking good, quite a mature outline for a 2 year old. Bet you can't wait for him to be old enough to ride.

Glad you got them lynn, i'll try and post smaller images next time

He's pretty mature looking isn't he, and a fair size now too. Part of me is excited about next year, part of me is fearful as I have a dodgy back these days and lost my bottle with a horse i loaned recently. But... we'll see how the spring goes and try lessons and go from there. If all else fails I plan to break him to harness.

I'm sure you'll be fine when you come to back him. Although I know that confidence does seem to diminish with age. I had a nasty fall on the road a couple of months ago and it took me ages to get back to feeling happy riding on the road again. It could be that I don't bounce as well as I did when young! Hubby said that wasn't I old enough to have grown out of the desire to play with ponies - No chance!
It's a shame your loan horse has knocked your confidence, but keep going. You're braver than me if you fancy driving. The driven horse looks so far away. I'd rather be sat on it so I can feel what it might be planning to do.
